Next years CASH!!!!

ESPN.com - NFL - NFL salary cap climbing to $116 million in '08

Apparently the cap is gonna go up $7million next year. How much is this gonna help the Redskins next year?

Re: Next years CASH!!!!

That's a big increase, just to clarify this is for 2008 though. The cap for next season, 2007, will be $109M.

Everyone should start referring to this year as 06-07, and next year as 07-08, I always get confused because the Madden game this year is 07, so I always think this year is 07.

Well, next year's cap was announced at the same time this year's was (when the CBA was finalized) so I'm guessing that this year's moves took that into consideration.

I'm really hoping we don't break the bank on Ladell, cause if we do, I think it will go to show that we still don't grasp the cap concept yet.

Actually I think the one thing this front office does very well is managing the cap.

Agreed. We were promised cap hell by everyone but we have managed to spend money like a Saudi prince.

If being able to shell out big bonuses for free agents while staying under the cap is managing "very well" then yes, they can do that.
But managing the cap this way created the turmoil we had at the end of the old cba. Remember the scenarios we faced if there was no cba last march? We would've had to purge the roster or get guys like lavar to not only restructure, but take a cut.
You could also argue that the real reason we didn't re-sign Smoot (though he is overpaid in Minn.) & Pierce was because cap hell loomed a year away. Add to that the Coles debacle, though it turned out well that we got santana, we ate a lot of dead cap space. The team didn't learn & signed AA & Loyd to deals which we're stuck with, whether they are here or not.
I guess you can say that Eric Schaffner (sp?) & the Dannay et al find creative ways to spend money w/in the cap, but their spending eventually catches up & we'll see that in a few years at the end of this cba if they continue like this.

Alot of teams were going to be in hot water if the new CBA didn't go through.

We've been hearing about the impending cap hell since 2000. They're obviously doing something right when it comes to working the numbers, that's all I'm saying.

I'm not trying to say all the moves have been wise ones, but they do have a great understanding of how the cap works and how to massage it to their advantage.

Re: Next years CASH!!!!

It could actually help us right away as we could push money towards that year. Perhaps this is playing into our pushing to keep Betts right now.

That's what the Eagles always do with their extra cap room each year...if they have any money left on this years cap they should definitely sign someone to a LT deal.

I don't know what to think about this. We built a playoff team by signing free agents. A decent playoff team that was three fewer fourth quarter meltdowns away from going 13-3. Moreover, even if the offensive fa's have underperformed, I still don't oppose having brought them in. The problem is, when you have one of the worst defenses in the NFL it's tough to win. And you can only blame so much of that on Arch, I'm sorry.

I guess I'm just baffled by this season

Re: Next years CASH!!!!

I find the news of the cap increasing scary for us as an organization. The last thing we need is another excuse to further the "free agent" player personnel philosophy. Winning teams succeed by acquiring quality players by every avenue available. We cannot win by only adding old "has beens" and "maybe's" to the team.

I know coach Gibbs and Danny have both thought this was a winning formula but it isn't and our age is showing. This is especially true on the defensive side of the ball where team speed, aggression and durability just aren't there. The cap increase should be looked upon positively but only if we invest it diversely. It has come up on prior threads that Dallas and San Diego are in great position to flourish because of there willingness to make risks on youth, and developing their own players.

I think the most important thing to do this off season isn't to acquire some big name. It's to re evaluate ourselves. To admit we aren't on the verge of a super bowl and only need a couple key (FA) pieces to get there. This would mean changing Gibbs and Snyders minds. As well as probably firing the entire front office. Its equal to a revolution but I think this needs to be done.

Re: Next years CASH!!!!

Amazing what a year does to you.
Last year we were all saying, "Damn, these free agents really paid off, good job front office!" This year, even though we have had more key injuries than ANY team in football, we are saying "free agents don't work" because we're 4-8.
Brunell was a problem, he's been benched. Campbell is learning.
We have holes in the CB areas because Rogers and more importantly, Springs have been injured most of the season.
Had we gotten a ket free agent CB in the offseason and allowed Campbell to be the man from day 1, I bet we'd be sitting at around .500. Yes, 6-6! Even with all the injuries! It's only as bleak as it is because of a couple problems, and alot of injuries. Our bad luck should be all gone and we'll start next season fresh and ready to kick ass.
