Rumored Portis Trade offered FROM! the Lions

Well, I really didnt want to post this, because it seems soooooooo far fetched to me, but allegedly (I read this on ES) Tripple X reported that the LIONS OFFERED (just so no one is tearing the Skins front office apart for shopping Portis) a trade for Portis....

I've heard three different versions of this (which again, makes me think its false), but I'll break each one down.

#1
Lions Get: Clinton Portis
Redskins Get: Shaun Rogers
(If the Redskins ever took that I'd probaboly kill myself, so that seems really unrealistic)

#2 (The One Reported on Tripple X)
Lions Get: Clinton Portis
Redskins Get: Dre Bly, Lions #2 overall Draft Pick

Now this one seems really far fetched to be offered to us. Portis really isnt worth that to another team (He's worth a lot to us, but in the market itself I personally dont think he's worth much more than a high second rounder). But if that was really offered to us, it'd be really stupid of the Lions... and honestly, it would be stupid of us not to take.

Now Tafkas read somewhere else that it was reported that:
Lions Get: Portis, #6 pick
Redskins Get: Bly, #2 Pick, Lions 3rd Round Pick.

Again, I really didnt want to give this more attention than it deserves, becuase I think all three are false, but if they allegedly reported it on Tripple X, I guess it deserves some attention.

Personally, I'm the #1 guy for keeping Porits a Washington Redskin, because I think he is more valuable to this team than just about anyone....but it would be really hard to say no if the Lions offered Bly and the #2 pick for him (w/ us keeping 6).

NO!!!!! I am so sick of Trade Portis Threads...He is "THE CORE REDSKIN". If we trade him I will just puke. Trade Betts instead.

None of those make any sense. especially one involving portis and #6 for Bly,#2 pick and a 3rd. One, no reason Detroit needs portis. Jones has done pretty well for them. they need a ton of help in other areas of the team than RB. How about a QB! they have the #2 pick for christ sake, no way they trade that when they have the change to get a Brady Quinn.

Fact of the matter is, everything is on the table for the Skins this year - everything. I know Gibbs will deny every rumor until he's blue in the face, but I have to believe even if these reports are false, everything has to be on the table this year.

Re: Rumored Portis Trade offered FROM! the Lions

Can someone please give clarification on what kind of salary cap hit we would take if we traded Portis? If we trade him before June 1st - do we have a huge deadcap hit in 2007? If we trade him post June 1st what would be the hits in the followng 2 years?

I just want to know even if the Redskins decided to trade him, can they really afford to do this at all?

The short answer is they could afford it if they really wanted to.

Trading him would hit us with a cap hit of $8.2 million in 2007. He's already on the books for $7.1 million in 2007 as it is, so it wouldn't be that much more to absorb. BUT, the Redskins have no intention of having him count $7.1 million in 2007: they'll restructure (he'll be willing) and give him what his contract calls for. That will reduce his cap number to something like $3 million, so really, the opportunity cost of trading Portis is like $5.2 million or something.

If the 'Skins wanted to make this their major personnel move and not really make many other changes, they'd still be able to get rid of either Archuleta or Lloyd, but probably not both.

I'd say the likelihood of all this happening is something like 0.00001%. Gibbs loves Portis, and with Duckett leaving, we can't just go with Betts as our #1 and have nobody behind him (Rock Cartwright does not count, he is not good enough).

Thanks Schneed for claification on this. So basically we can rule out any trade with him because we need to have him restrucure to save cap space in 2007.

Yeah basically. At the very least, it's fair to say that while trading him wouldn't be impossible from a cap standpoint, doing so would limit our other free agent signings.

Maybe that's a good thing, I dunno. Maybe we don't want to bring in a whole lot of free agents.

But the bigger issue is that Gibbs loves Portis and would never trade him. He just means too much to the team, Betts' great year notwithstanding.

Just curious to know how you are sure CP will be willing to restructure. If it means less $ in his pocket I doubt CP will restructure.

Gibbs does like CP and AS likes Betts so it will be interesting to see what happens.

The money owed to CP would turn into a signing bonus/guaranteed money.

I could be wrong though. Schneed?

That's usually what they do, but I also think that just takes the pressure off of the cap for this season. It usually means that future cap hits are just gonna get worse. That one I need Schneed for...

Yep that's how it works.

That's the thing about a restructure, there isn't less money involved. A paycut involves less money, but a restructure does not. Portis is owed $3.5 million in base salary this year. The Redskins could clear $2.0 - $2.5 million in cap space just by saying hey Clinton, of the $3.5 million you're scheduled to make, we'll give you $3.0 million up front as a signing bonus, and we'll give you the other $500K as the vet minimum base salary. He'll be like you mean I get a big check up front instead of spread out over the year in game checks? Where do I sign?

There's no incentive to deny a restructure.
