Broncos-Lions Swap Will Change Draft Boards

The Broncos-Lions trade will likely have its biggest ramifications come draft day. The Lions acquired RT George Foster from the Broncos as part of the swap and already have a very good LT in Jeff Backus. Most league analysts had the Lions drafting LT Joe Thomas with the 2nd overall pick. Now that the Lions have a great LT and an RT whom they presumably traded for with every expectation that he will start, I think the Lions will NOT draft Thomas.

My guess is that Matt Millen sees the writing on the wall (and on the fan's posters on gamedays) and knows he needs an impact player. With both tackle positions shored up, I fully expect the Lions to draft a player at a skill positions who can immediately impact the team.

Very good point.

Does this now make our pick worth more for a potential trade down? I'm thinking this is good news for us either way.

Yeah, how about Calvin Johnson? NOt! Good point though.

I still think there's a chance Calvin Johnson falls to the Skins and we have to keep him.

If the Raiders trade Moss, I would put my kid's college fund that Johnson goes #1.

There is no one in the draft that stands out as much as him.

So if Thomas is off the list then who?
Johnson is the best player there and they could use him. Would they actually take another WR? It would suck to pass him up to avoid the embarassment of taking another WR and have him go on to be Jerry Rice #2.

Re: Broncos-Lions Swap Will Change Draft Boards

My best guess is this:

1. Raiders - Russell
Russell doesn't exactly fit their "system," but by all accounts, Al Davis has a big man crush on Russell.

2. Lions - Johnson
Yes, I'm going out on a limb and prediciting they take another wideout. Johnson has more potential to have the biggest impact on any team in the draft and, thus, save Millen's job. I'm thinking Millen is banking on asmuch and picks him. If Johnson doesn't have a big impact and Millen gets criticized for taking another WR, who cares? He probably would have been fired anyway.

I don't think they go with a QB here as Quinn probably isn't worth the #2 overall. I don't think they go with tackle given that they have a LT in Jeff Backus who could make the Pro Bowl and they just traded for an RT whom they likely expect to start. I don't think they take Peterson since the knock on him is that he's injury prone and they already have a back in Kevin Jones who can't stay out of the training room. I simply think they go WR (although I'm probably wrong).

3. Cleveland - Peterson
Cleveland isn't exactly enthralled with Reuben Droughns, but does reportedly like Charlie Frye.

4. Tampa Bay - Thomas
Thomas is the best value at this point and could turn out to be the best player in the draft. Given that Johnson will be off of the board, I bet Tampa will draft him.

5. Arizona - Branch
It's a toss up between DE Anderson, Adams, or DT Branch.

Why wouldn't Detroit draft Adrian Peterson? Kevin Jones is not a premier back

I think with Jones and Bell they will sit on RB. RBs are easier to get than almost any position. They are dumb as crap if they take Peterson. Might as well just suck it up, grow some balls and take Johnson.

Kevin Jones is good, but has been injury prone of late. Peterson would be a good bet, or they might go w/Quinn. They do need a qb.

Prior to the trade, I would have thought that Detroit MIGHT draft Peterson. Jones is often-injured and, even when healthy, has been benched a few times for poor performances. Jones hasn't had a good showing since his rookie year.

But, now that they added Bell, I don't see Detroit going with Peterson. My guess is Peterson falls to Cleveland - a team that is not enthused with their current crop of backs and is supposedly encouraged by QB Frye.

Michael Smith, of ESPN.com, reports the Detroit Lions have acquired RB Tatum Bell, OT George Foster and what is believed to be a fifth-round pick from the Denver Broncos for CB Dre' Bly.

The Lions now have a RB. KJ was never very good and injury-prone, so he'll have a good backup rather than starter.

I can't see the Lions picking ANOTHER WR with their history of WR picks flopping or underachieving, but it's possible now that they're suring up their line. Calvin Johnson is too good to pass up.

There's no way he's still available for us at 6th.

Re: Broncos-Lions Swap Will Change Draft Boards

I think the will probably still take Thomas. This makes you think a little bit, but they may have just accepted Foster to provide depth...hes not that good.

I don't think Backus is that special, but since they just gave him a sizable contract last year, he will be starting at one of the tackles this season.
