With Doc gone now, do we get a compensatory pick?
So here is a question I pose to the guys with the most buissness knowledge of the NFL. Do we get a compensatory pick for losing Doc, if so do we get it this year or next, and what round would it be? Thanks for the info.

No. Doc was an unrestricted free agent.

He wasn't a RFA, but I think I know what you mean.

Re: With Doc gone now, do we get a compensation pick?
Ok thanks guys. I wasn't sure.
I know the difference between the two but, I thought for some reason that the NFL gave out more picks for players leaving in free agency. Here's my example. A couple of years ago the Broncos drafted Maurice Clarett at the end of day one , with a end of the 3rd round pick they recieved from the NFL because they lost a player in free agency. Now I know about RFA and unrestricted, but doesn't RFA mean the team that signs player x has to give thier draft picks. Not extra picks given to them by the NFL. Am I wrong here or am I on the right track.

Your on the right track...but i don't think it happens until NEXT season. They look at a whole assortment of things, like how much it affected you and blah blah blah...i'm pretty sure we got one after smoot and pierce left that one year.

Not Pierce because we didn't draft him in 01. He was a free agent pick up out of college by the Redskins. Not subject to compensation!

Thanks Bushead I know I wasn't going crazy here. Maybe we only got one after those two players left because Pierce was an URFA after the draft and not a second round pick like Smoot was.

Re: With Doc gone now, do we get a compensation pick?
we lost one starter, but signed two more, the contract values are pretty equal, so at best we might get a pick around 250 (or 255). i'd guess we'd get nothing though.

Re: With Doc gone now, do we get a compensation pick?
I may be wrong, but I think the two we signed are not considered since the team we signed them from did not draft them. I thought the compensatory draft picks only considered players signed from their original teams for whom the team had used a draft pick to obtain.

Re: With Doc gone now, do we get a compensation pick?
Lots of things enter into the compensatory draft formula: original draft position, value of the contract, games played under the new contract, and the ability to spell "ridiculous" after a few cocktails. While Dockery's value as a second round player who is making an ass-load of cash should help, his compensatory value will depend upon his ability to stay healthy for the Bills. Also, if one more person spells it "rediculous", we may actually forfeit a pick.
