portable GPS

Hey guys, my wife recently got a new job that's going to require some travel around the state, I'd like to get her a portable GPS for her car. Anyone have any suggestions for a quality, easy to use GPS unit?

thanks

Re: portable GPS

The ONLY choice is Microsoft Streets and Trips. You plug it into your laptop and it's only $100.

Re: portable GPS

It's a lot more sophisticated than any hand-held or built-in unit you can buy. I use it for all my traveling. When you're driving you can just get it to search for gas stations, restaurants, bars, etc. and it'll find them in whatever radius you specify.

Can he delete the part which would tell his wife where all the bars are located?

LOL I'd never have to worry about that. She's the kind of girl who loves to take a bath and be in bed by 8pm and she's usually fast asleep by 9-9:30. She's never been much of a partier.

Carbon copy of my wife, right there. Asleep every night by 9:00 pm.

Re: portable GPS

Good news is that once you get the GPS, the upgrade each year is only $30.

HAHA. Yeah, you can turn on and off. Just turn on the "historical landmarks" when you come home!

Re: portable GPS

TMC, how do you go about setting this up in your car? Do you just toss the laptop in the passenger seat? Is there any sort of stand or something to hold it in place worth looking at?

Yeah, I bought a power inverter to go with my laptop so I don't worry about battery life. I also have an FM broadcaster so that the directions get broadcast through my car speakers on where I need to turn. The GPS itself is really small. It sticks on your windshield with a suction cup.

Re: portable GPS

You can't go wrong with Garmin Nuvi. The newer modles are pricey but the older should be more affordable.
