If Not Joe, Then Who?

Let's suppose that Joe Gibbs decided not to return as head coach next year and instead just moved into a front office role.

Who would you want to be the Redskins Head Coach in 2008?

Let me make this 100% clear. This is not a "Joe Must Go" thread. And I don't want to discuss on this thread whether or not he should return as head coach. That is not what this thread is about.

If you can't abide by that, be advised there will be a zero tolerance policy.

So...tell us, assuming Gibbs didn't come back, who should be the head coach in 2008?

I would like to see B. Cowher and his new staff. At this point I feel we have the players( at least most of them), I think we need a new captain of this ship, a proven winner!

Please god not G. Williams

sad to say snyder is already set at G. williams. if this is so, please do keep Al sunders to run his offense in this team without Greg meddling it

Re: If Not Joe, Then Who?

I think it will be Williams, and I think he will probably fail. The last time they re-signed Williams, they all but came out and said he would be the coach when Gibbs leaves(They can't actually say that because of hiring regulations).

I do think it would be good to let Saunders run the offense the way he wants, not some butchered half Joe/half Al flavor of it. If it doesn't work, move on, but at least let him run it the way he wants to and find out.

I don't know who I want to be the next head coach, but I feel confident Danny will not pick a good one. He won't hire a GM, so how can we trust him to hire a coach. If he doesn't recognize there name in the paper, he is not interested. He manages this team the way I manage my Madden 2008 game(Except I actually win). Nothing matters if they don't start with a GM and give that GM power and some control.

I love Gibbs, he has been responsible for 95% of the greatest sports fan moments of my life. That is why it hurts to feel that he needs to go. I don't believe this team is any better now than when he got here. I would give no other coach this long, but I just have a hard time staying mad at Gibbs. Danny would never fire him, but I think Joe will realize his time here has been a failure and step down. Oh well, just more sad thoughts for a sad week.

I'd say Cowher. Gregg Williams is a great coordinator but as struggled as a head coach. Saunders has never been a head coach. Cowher was phenomenal in Pittsburgh, and has tons of experience. I would take him in a second (ASSUMING Gibbs leaves of course). I would certainly hope we could retain Williams as def coordinator regardless.

Saunders was a head coach in San Diego years ago.

But if you're Cowher why do you come back to be a head coach unless you have absolute complete control? I mean, I'm assuming that Gibbs wouldn't go away entirely. He'd still be the President.

So here you are, Bill Cowher, a proven coach and you're probably getting paid a boatload of money by Snyder. But, at this point in your career don't you want more than just to be head coach? Don't you want something more?

Re: If Not Joe, Then Who?

I would want to see Bill Cower come online, I feel we are a player or two away from having a dominant team with the right kind of motivating coach. I feel Bill can fill that void. He has a great history of finding talent in the draft as well. If not Bill.....well I would rather see Russ Grimm come home than to give either of our coordinators a shot at HC.

im with you warrior..we are in my eyes a dominant reciever and pass rusher away from pay dirt. Jason Campbell is putting up huge numbers but when we get into the red zone we cant score. Yes the line isnt healthy but with Cowher and his smash mouth ways i think we can become a better red zone team. Were only about 20 points away from having 4 more wins compared to 4 of the games we lost. the problem is lack of scoring once in the red zone. a dominant positions reciever....a great pass rusher to help a great secondary..and cowher to help with intensity and red zone scoring..

Overall head coaches who act as GMs haven't had a ton of success in the league. Cowher was never a GM or team prez in Pittsburgh and had a great run there. If ain't broke, why try to fix it? I understand the idea of trying to set higher goals and achieve more, but I think he may be setting himself up for failure if he wants complete control.

Wouldn't it seem a little silly to hire another retired coach with a Super Bowl ring(s) who had never been a personnel man before and expect him to excel in both roles?

GM Scud has identified the biggest problem at Redskin Park. Listen, ever since Synder has purchased the team the one constant at Redskin Park during his tenure is not having a seperate GM from the head coach except when he fired Casserly in the beginning of his tenure. With every other avenue been tried why not give this one a try for once?
