When did you realize you were a Skins fan?

I have an interesting tale about my experience. When I was about five or six years old I was an Eagles fan. I had no ties to Philly whatsoever. I just liked the color green and the wings on their helmets. I was too young to understand hometown pride or the Redskins. That all changed the day I went car shopping with my folks. We went to Martens Chevrolet in Silver Spring. The very place where Chief Z worked. That particular day I was wearing a Harold Carmichael jersey, the kind you that you could order from the SEARS catalog. This was back before the explosion in popularity of sports apparell. We walked into the showroom and with my bright green Eagles jersey I stood out like a sore thumb. One of the sales staff looked at me and said, "Uh oh you better take that shirt off!" My Dad and I looked at the salesman with perplexed facial expressions, asking Why? We soon had our answer. From the other side of the showroom we heard this "What the hell is that jersey doing in my showroom!" It was Chief Z sans the Indian headress and gameday outfit. My Dad reconized him instantly and started to laugh. Chief-Z ragged on me a little and then did a magic trick. He lit a ciagarette and then extinguished it on my Eagles jersey, without burning a hole in it. He showed a few vehichles to my Dad and then we went home. He signed a business card, "Hail to the Redskins,Chief Z, Hole in the Eagles shirt!" When we got home I took off the Eagles jersey and never wore it again. I have been a Redskins fan ever since.

I remember the first time that I watched the Redskins seriously, they started the season 0-7, but I still remained a fan, since I really became addicted to all the energy that people in this area have for the Skins. Everyone has a bounce in their step the next day when the Skins win.

Chief Z is a great guy. One of my team mates (DC Divas) bought a car from the dealership he now works for, and they started talking about football...he has since been to a few of our games, in his full headress. He is a true "hometown" football fan...even the women's football team.

Thats a pretty cool story cowboyhater. I used to like the Raiders and Bengals to go along with the Skins becuase of their jerseys.

What I have to ask you is, what did you like aobut the Eagles jersey?!? That had to be one of the ulgiest colors in the league, lol. I mean, looking back I know why I liked the bengals jersey, it was pretty like a tiger, but that weird green. heh. Im just teasing ya!

It was just the color green and especially the wings on the helmets.

I'm all burgundy and gold now!

We moved to Memphis from the DC area when I was seven. I wasn't really a football fan then, I remember playing with my toys in the living room while my dad watched the Skins. I wasn't really into watching sports on tv, much like any youngster back then I wanted to be outside with my friends on Sunday afternoons.

I remember watching a Redskins-Cowboys MNF game, can't remember if we won or loss, but I do know that I fell in love with that team. Gibbs, Riggins, Theisman, Joe Washington (could there have been a better name for a Redskin?), Art Monk, Green, those were the guys I rooted for. When the Cowboys offensive line all stood up and reset, the Skins d-line shifted too and I was hooked. Ever since, it's been all Skins for me.

Old Thread Topic!

But, I grew up in Alexandria Va., near Mt. Vernon, and watched Sonny 'tho the ball, watched the Sonny/Billy debate, Lombardi, HOF Coach Gibbs in his first tour, and everything since.

I don't have any recollection, but probably in 1942 or 1943 - as soon as I could comprehend what my Dad was so excited about!!

Yeah I started liking the Bengals a lot when they changed their helmets to the stripes too. Kind of a dumb reason to like a team, but that's how kids are...
I agree, the old Eagle green was very ugly....the new darker version is much better to look at....as we beat them!

when you grow up in a household that only watches the Redskins and nothing else on football Sundays, you kind of have to root for them...however, i am not complaining...i will be a Skins fan until i die...

when i was 5 years old i borrowed my uncle's dexter manley jersey and authentic redskin helmet and dressed up like a skin. I loved them until kerry collins, my favorite PSU player at the time, went to the panthers then because of him and the LB corps (mills, greene, and lathon) i was torn. Then Collins began having problems and was cut and later my favorite nittany lion of all time LaVar Arrington joined the skins i was back 110%!!!!!

I was 7 years old, watching the Cowboys versus Redskins championship game. When Darryl Grant high stepped into the endzone with an interception then you saw the stadium literally shaking, I thought that was just the coolest thing. I started high-stepping everywhere. Mom would call me down for dinner and I'd high-step into the kitchen. She'd tell me to go brush my teeth and I'd high-step into the bathroom. Did that for about a week.

That was probably one of the greatest days in my life. The image of a prone Danny White also sticks in my mind. I am so ready for Gibbs to bring us som victorys over the Cowboys. The days of their dominance of the Redskins are over!

My dad was a big Skins fan, so I was. But during the mid-70's when I was like 5-6 years old, we were living in Germany, and for a short time I decided I liked the, eh-ehm, Cowboys because of the stupid star on the helmet, and they were always doing well (Hey, I was just a kid!). But it didn't take long for him to convince me that they were the enemy though!
After that, I always liked the Skins and considered them "my team", but wasn't big into them (or the NFL for that matter) until the first superbowl year. Then I was a true Redskins fan, and have been ever since. Actually over the past few years (since the late 90's), I've become more and more die-hard than ever....
