Matt Bowen says Williams is the best choice

Interesting perspective here, he says he actually thought more highly of Williams than Gibbs:

Without a doubt, Gregg Williams is the best fit for the Redskins.

Williams has been running his defense like a head coach would run a team since he arrived in D.C. When you had an issue with something or someone on the team, you went to Williams. When you wanted to know what the appropriate dress code was for road trips, you asked Williams, and when you busted a coverage, or missed a tackle, you most definitely went to Williams.

I felt as if I played for two head coaches in Washington. I respected Coach Joe Gibbs, but I thought higher of Coach Williams. Maybe I was impressed with the way he ran the team defensive meeting or his talks the night before games, but I wanted to impress the man. He speaks with emotion when he talks to the defense, you believe him. More than any coach I have played for in this league, Williams was the guy I wanted to play for. He is a players’ coach, but he rules with an iron fist, equaling the perfect combination for winning. He demands your best in meetings, practices and on Sundays. He demands you be a professional.

Yes, there is time for fun, but when it comes down to business, it is about winning with Williams. By far, he is the most prepared coach I have ever seen. Scouting reports become manuals for winning, and film study a way of life. I thought I had pro football all figured out, but after two seasons with Williams, I became the student of the game I wanted to be.

GW definitely has mad leadership skills....you can tell from his press conferences that he know what he is doing.

It's safe to say that Bowen is a bit biased since he mainly dealt with GW instead of Gibbs, but he makes some good points regardless. And even though Bowen liked his tough guy approach, that doesn't always jive with every player.

I think it would work with this team though. We have professionals on this team. Even quirky guys like CP are serious about football. I think his leadership would translate well for this team. Really well. I am glad to see some analysis of GW from a player like that.

Yeah but we all know what CP thinks about practice. Do you think he would appreciate bootcamp Williams in August?

I just doubt GW would try and change the atmosphere all that much. In the end he comes off as a results guy and not a needless drill sargeant way like Coughlin does.

The Tuna was a hardass too, and quite successful. Personally I don't see how it should be an issue. Also Belicheck doesn't seem like the most cuddly coach, but the players love him because he is a winner.

Phillip Daniels said that Williams gave a lot of speeches to the TEAM before games and when he spoke, the guys listened.......on both sides of the ball.

Re: Matt Bowen says Williams is the best choice

I have to say that ever since the Tom Friend artical Ive been very bias towards Williams.

This artical is the nicest thing Ive ever heard anyone say about him, and I might just be changing my tune towards GW. You have to respect a guy that is all about preperation and hard work to get a win. If players dont want to do everything it takes to play as good as they can each Sunday do we really want them here? Im a huge Lavar fan, but I guess that was part of the problem, he wanted to rely on his atheleticism and not the preperation and study that everyone else was doing. Kinda disrespectfull to all the other players.

You let Archuletta's opinion ruin your view of GW, even after the D did a complete 180 this year?

Wow.

Matty poinmted out that that was Arch just spewing sour grapes over being revealed as a fraud. That and a little inferring about things like the Lavar situation made it seem way worse. I think they made mistakes in handling issues but it seems to me the problems could lay right at Dale Lindsey's feet. They got rid of him and all of a sudden everyone thinks GW is the greatest ever in the locker room. Maybe GW just wanted his players to be pros and not get into pissing matches with coaches even when the coach is a dick. I guess he gave Dale the benefit of the doubt and eventually realized that Dale WAS the problem. Seems like that to me anyways.

Re: Matt Bowen says Williams is the best choice

I mentioned this in another thread that GW has respect from both o and d, great leadership skills, and he's organized and prepared at all times. I think that has the makings of a great HC.

I only hope that DS doesn't have something personal against GW. This process is a long one so i'm not jumping to conclusions right now. However, as mentioned in another thread, I don't really trust DS to make the best choice. He'll make what he thinks is the best choice. I don't know maybe i'm just too loyal to GW. I'd hate to let him go, he'll get his shot somewhere.

We saw this happen w/ the Steelers, when they overlooked Grimm and Whisenhunt for Tomlin. So, i wouldn't be too suprised.

Re: Matt Bowen says Williams is the best choice

Whatever i just remember matt bowen teasing us in the first game of gibbs' return, against tampa. He played a good game. Then he messed up his leg or something and then just played behind clark. Whatever, he is going to be biased. I would guess, all the guys that played on that 2004 team would respect the football mind of the defensive coaches more.

Re: Matt Bowen says Williams is the best choice

Bowen's comments make me want Williams to be the next coach even more now. If anything, I feel that he learned a little humility being around a great, but humble man in Gibbs. Williams is at the perfect age where he can still relate to young players, yet he brings a wealth of experience. I feel it's his time, if not here, then definitely somewhere.
