Obama's Speech
Ok, I'm surprised Saden has not started a thread yet on Obama's speech last night. I'll have to say the guy can give a speech and did a great job there was even a point or two where I agreed with what he was saying. One of the main things I agreed with was not giving Corps. tax breaks which ship jobs over sea's. Obama though has flawed thought on how to pay for his some 830 billion in new programs. He said he would pay for all of this buy cutting current spending and reviewing everything that we currently spend. The problem is allot of the current spending is tied up in bills and is allready spent. Then he has to get congress to agree with his cuts and change bills and also congress will have to cut their pork projects which gives them their power back home. So what are your thought about what he said last night.

Re: Obama's Speech
This is not a knock on Obama, it's a knock on politics in general:
Isn't it funny that EVERY Nomination speech talks of a small town plant shutting down, a kid that can't afford to go to school, and raising teachers salaries. Democrat or Republican it doesn't matter. We could go back to JFK and he probably spoke about these things. |

Re: Obama's Speech
One other thing Obama said was something about hard working people and minimum wage in the same sentense. I don't think there is a large % of hard working people making min. wage that have been in the work force for any amount of time.

How much you make rarely is a reflection as to how hard you work. In my experiences the more you make equals more responisiblty less actually grind out work. Plus you can work your ass off everyday making min. wage but if there is no opportunity to advance, it don't mean jack how hard you worked. The hard work simply keeps you employed.

Re: Obama's Speech
Then you can not live in the mibdle of nowhere. It isn't impossible to work your ass off, save some money and move a couple hundred miles to your state's biggest city and find a better paying job. A lot of people using this type of excuse fail to realize they are choosing to live where there aren't any opportunities.

Re: Obama's Speech
Great speech and great pre-speech video. The only thing I didn't like was how Obama uses that Southern drawl/preacher voice (a la MLK) in his speeches. It strikes me as fake and too self-aware. He doesn't talk like that in his everyday voice. But, that is nitpicking. 9 out of 10.

Re: Obama's Speech
While I agree with you that he is a great speaker the way he plans on paying for his 830 billion 28% increase in goverment is very flawed. He wants to cut current spending most of which is allready tied up in current bills which he will have to change. I'm not sure how he will get that done because you will have some people in congress who likes the bill and other who will have no problem doing away with that spending bill. This will be true rather its the Dems who supported the bill or the rep. who supported the spending. So he will have to pass his new spending hedged on hoping to reduce current spending and that will be very tough. Or, he will just increase the def..
