NEW YORK - In a sign of the times, the legendary National Debt Clock in New York City has run out of digits to record the growing debt.

Re: NYC National Debt Clock runs out of digits
Well, if we apply the same thought to this as we do our national fiscal policy, we'll just buy a bigger clock.

This administration sucks, plain and simple - no argument there. But to think you can simply tidy up the mess that is this country in a nice little package and blame it on one guy is a gross oversimplification. The economic and governmental woes go back decades and across party lines. What an incredibly tiny mind and myopic worldview it must take to conveniently chalk everything up to one guy. Simple minds look for strict one-to-one relationships and leave it at that. "Bush bad. Bush president. Ergo...all problems are a result of Bush." Thee branches of government designed with checks and balances in place, tens of thousands of officials and employees at work, and the best someone can come up with is "well this administration sucks." The intellectual arrogance and shallowness is staggering.

There are very few problems that can be blamed on a single administration. Several of Bush's policies certainly didn't make things better but he is not the root cause of every mess. History will probably not look too favorably upon the entire scope of Bush's administration...unless Obama turns out to be another Jimmy Carter.

In all seriousness that's a very good point and I certainly didn't mean to suggest that everyone needs to have a broad and deep education on every matter before commenting. It just seems so obvious to me that the problems in this nation, economic or otherwise, are too deep and complex to conveniently pin to one guy. The other side of that mentality is that a new president will suddenly reverse this entire thing (I don't care if you vote for Obama or McCain). One guy and his administration isn't going to reverse decades of overgrown government, schizophrenic foreign policy and enough pork spending to drive this country trillions of dollars into debt. The same mentality is evident in football. The team loses and the immediate reaction is to find the one guy we can all blame. I guess there's something cathartic to feeling like you can pin all your frustration on one face. It appears that there is an entire subculture of disgruntled individuals who have very valid beefs with this current administration. Unfortunately the extent of their knowledge on the topic pretty much cuts off after they watch the Daily Show every night or their favorite political pundit. Like someone pointed out earlier, it takes a whole lot of people to pass a bill or defeat a bill or propose a bill. If you kick back on your sofa in self-satisfaction as you parrot whatever the "Current Administration Joke of the Day" is, you're completely missing the real problem. And that goes both ways, Republican or Democrat.

What's sad is the last 8 years, and the best the repubs could spit out is McCain/Palin.

The shameful fact is that none of the current politicians really want to bring us back into a sane policy for tax/spending and instead want to take our hard earned money (be it $1 or $1million) put it to the "tyranny of the majority" so that they can stay in power. And finally also few if any Americans would support the real reduction in Government required to get it under control. ( some specifics examples of what I mean ... reduce the Army (not Navy or AF) to the size needed to protect OUR borders not to exert influence in the area of the day, clinton=Africa/East Europe bush=mideast; reduce governmental welfare to what it was when we were a growing country requiring self sufficiency = near zero; etc.) |

Interesting, tell us what you chalk up to Bush. What part has he played in all of this?

Dear Republicans. Hope you got all that money you stole from this country invested in gold.

Re: NYC National Debt Clock runs out of digits
Somewhat agree. This seems more accurate...
What's sad is the last 8 years, and the best the [political party] could spit out is [presidential candidate/vice presidential candidate].
