Cooley Sets New Skins TE Receptions Record

Yesterday against the bengals, TE Chris Cooley caught 6 passes for 51 yards in route to breaking his own redskins single season receptions record for a TE with 73 total receptions this year. In 2005 Cooley set the record with 71 catches for a TE in coach Gibbs H back role.

So for all of us who were wondering how coach Zorn would use Cooley in his WCo based offense, we have our answer and i think we all will look forward to watching Coooooollllleeyyy adding to his record with 2 games left.

some stats:

Year Games Rec Yds Lng TD

2004 16 37 314 31 6
2005 16 71 774 32 7
2006 16 57 734 66 6
2007 16 66 786 39 8
2008 14 73 764 28 1

career 78 304 3,372 28

some qoutes:

“I would be [angry] right now. Personally, if I played and got ready all offseason and in one game [was benched], it would be hard for me to say, 'Okay.' But he's handling it fine.”

“Mark's always good for something like that, ... He's serious, but we're out there having fun, too. We'll be 10 plays into a drive, and he'll say, 'All right guys, I'm just going to fumble this one, because I'm tired and we'll get off the field.' Or 'I'll just throw a pick and we'll try to score in less plays next time.'”

“A lot of big plays happened when things broke down, ... The linemen picked up their blocks and guys got open.”

“We walked off the field in Dallas and it was the greatest game ever,”

“It's just a matter of what gets called, that's as far as it goes, ... Whatever gets called is what we're going to run, and we haven't called a lot of intermediate stuff like that. That's how it's been so far.”

“What we are is a team that runs the ball hard and makes big plays. And when we don't make big plays, then we're slow.”

“We've come together and done a great job as a team. We're really playing as a team. We're a bunch of friends and family, and I think that's helping us. It's a big reason why we're winning games.”

“[A year ago, the Redskins were 3-5 and trying to unearth a modicum of offensive success, lacking a deep game all season long. As they were then, they are competitive in virtually every game but have found a way to win close games in Gibbs's second year back.] It's a huge difference, ... It's a completely different attitude. Last year I think we were all down and we didn't want to be around here too much.”

(please note these qoutes seem to be from a few years ago, please feel free to add your own cooley quotes!)

THANK YOU CAPT CHAOS!!!
go skins!!!

lol man his '05 qoutes make you think hes talking about the '08 skins. ouch!

edit: obviously not the qoutes about how coach gibbs held the team together, quite the opposite now. but the qoutes about the lack of making big plays.

I love the guy, but he probably broke the record for critical fumbles as a Redskin TE too!

You beat me to it. Cooley has three fumbles this year. Portis by comparison has only two, but he has carried/touched the ball 291 times. Cooley has fumbled three times on only 73 touches.

Cooley leads all tight ends in yards after contact. Sure, he could bring his fumbles down to zero if he took a knee after catching the pass, but what he brings to the table is the ability to run with the ball. Three fumbles is meaningless compared to the key first downs he's fought for after initial contact.

I agree wit this statement, unforutnately his fumbles come at the wrong time during the course of a game.

Re: Cooley Sets New Skins TE Receptions Record

yeah the 1 td really stands out, especially for a team struggling to score in the red zone. (even though it seems we dont get in the redzone much)

about the fumbles, he has 3 and 2 were for a loss counting the bengals game this year. i think i remember seeing 1 or 2 total fumbles over the past 4 years before this season so id chalk that more up to just guys getting a helmet on the ball. he got flat-out drilled by that bengals player.

Re: Cooley Sets New Skins TE Receptions Record

Yeah, big congrats to Cools. He's having another monster year. His blocking has gotten much better, too. Sure the TDs are down, but that's a function of a downright laughable offense, not Cooley's fault.

He's very durable (knock on wood), and really consistent as well. IF he keeps up these kind of numbers into his 30's, we're looking at not only a future member of the Redskins Ring of Honor, but a possible Hall of Famer as well.

That hit he took when lost the ball looked like a helmet to helmet. Should have been a flag.

He had started to run with the ball and they do not have helmet to helmet when running with the ball.
