SI's Best & Worst Owners

Imagine that Daniel Snyder thrown under the bus again

'Snyder is a good businessman and spares no expense with one of the most profitable franchises in sports. But maybe that's the problem: The young billionaire runs the team more like a first-time fantasy-football manager. Among the most expensive outlays: nearly $225 million committed to LaVar Arrington, Bruce Smith, Deion Sanders, Lavernues Coles and Adam Archuleta. Not one is still with the team and Washington hasn't come anywhere near the Super Bowl. Think Snyder learned his lesson? This past offseason, he locked up three players -- Albert Haynesworth, DeAngelo Hall and Derrick Dockery -- for a combined $162 million. To make matters worse, he became one of the first owners to charge fans to attend training camp. '

Re: SI's Best & Worst Owners

at the time most of those signings made alot of sense. hindsight is always easy to question.

hey the Jets paid how much to get Favre last season? how much did they pay him? and how did they do? i guess their owner is bad
Saints gave a entire draft for ricky williams. how did that go?

For another perspective (this is from last summer)

Owner rankings, Part 2: Kraft's no joke - NFL - Yahoo! Sports

Quote:
3. Washington Redskins – Daniel Snyder: When most fans hear Snyder’s name, they blurt out words to describe him that might not be suitable for network television. Here’s the first one that comes to my mind: Awesome. Snyder generates revenue like a money-printing machine (his team ranks first in the NFL, at a reported $312 million, and is also atop the league in sponsorship dollars), happily spends it to improve his franchise and makes his players – you know, the ones who destroy their bodies on Sundays for the pleasure of the masses – feel pampered and appreciated. He is the closest thing to former 49ers boss Eddie DeBartolo, and eventually he’ll get the rings to prove it.

What went down Sunday at Redskins Park tells you all you need to know about Snyder’s ownership style. While attending the Skins’ first practice of training camp, Snyder and executive vice president Vinny Cerrato winced as veteran defensive Phillip Daniels went down with a knee injury. On their way to lunch in the cafeteria, they learned that Daniels had suffered a season-ending torn ACL. After sitting down with coach Jim Zorn and defensive coordinator Greg Blache, they began discussing their options. “I want to win,” Snyder told the group. “Let’s do what we have to do to win.” Concluding that disgruntled Dolphins defensive end Jason Taylor was by far the best player they’d have a chance to acquire, Snyder gave the go-ahead to make a trade. Before finishing his meal Cerrato was on the phone with Parcells, Miami’s executive vice president of football operations, discussing a trade for the 2006 NFL defensive player of the year. By that evening the deal was done, with Washington giving up second- and sixth-round draft picks, and Snyder agreeing to shell out $16 million over two years, the remaining money on Taylor’s contract. Because of Snyder’s aggressive approach, the ‘Skins were able to acquire Taylor before their NFC East rivals, the Giants, could work out a three-way trade with the Dolphins and Saints that would have sent Taylor to New Orleans for second- and fifth-round picks, followed by a swap of Taylor for tight end Jeremy Shockey.

Upon the trade’s completion, Snyder sent his private jet to pick up Taylor’s wife and children in the Dallas area; it then flew to South Florida to collect the newest Redskins player and transport him to training camp. That’s the same jet that, last December, whisked quarterback Todd Collins up to Boston in time to join his wife (who’d been induced into emergency labor) before she gave birth to the couple’s son. After Hurricane Katrina Snyder flew tight end Robert Royal to New Orleans to collect his family, who hopped aboard the jet and returned to Northern Virginia. And last December he chartered a 747 to fly the entire team to slain safety Sean Taylor’s funeral in Miami. That move wasn’t about winning; it was about doing the right thing. When Snyder finally hoists the Lombardi Trophy one of these years, it might be worth biting your tongue – at least in front of the kids.
And the $162 million claim about AH, Dockery, and Hall is such an incomplete analysis.

I like that write up on Snyder a lot, SS. But the list it comes from is pretty broken. They have Jerry Jones at #2, and the Rooney family at #15??? Pretty ass backwards.

Word. More focused on what they say about him though than the ranking

Re: SI's Best & Worst Owners

i would rather have Snyder, who will at least try to spend money to win, then someone like Jeff Lurie. always looking for the cheap way out. at least we know our owners are trying

QFT.

I do think Snyder needs to hire a GM with a pulse and step back a little from the "GM roles" of the game. Other than that though its hard to find fault with Snyder. Hes a Redskins fan who does anything in his power to win games. Id much rather have Snyder when you compare him to some other owners who try to nickel and dime there way year after year.

I totally agree. The guy at least tries to make things happen. The Ford ownership of the Lions is an absolute joke. Neither Bill SR or Billy JR know a damn thing about football. Damn they even made Barry Sanders retire way too early!!!! Not crazy about the Skins FO and the QB crap with Cutler and Sanchez though. JC might decide to walk regardless, unless we do go to the SB or at least deep in the playoffs, then maybe he will stay, along with a big contract from the Danny himself.

Re: SI's Best & Worst Owners

Dan paid for a all pro DT who was in the MVP talks and ppl want to bash him.

The lions just paid a ROOKIE who has never taken the field similiar money and you dont hear a word.. stop hating because our owner brings in the talent to help us win. many teams wanted big Al and we got him.. get over it haters. if it had been NE or the Gmen it would be the final piece to makin their D the next steel curtain but because its dan he overpaid for a bust DT.

Yeah the Eagles are always 20 mil under the cap, yet they fail to bring in help for McNabb each yr.. now may be too late. their window was wide open the past few yrs.

I just don't get why they're still hammering him for signings that happened almost a decade ago.
