Collins locks up the #2 job, Colt and Chase fighting for the #3

Redskins Insider - Collins Gets Nod as Brennan, Daniel Battle

For the fourth consecutive season, Todd Collins will be the Redskins' backup quarterback, and Colt Brennan is in a battle with rookie Chase Daniel for the No. 3 job, Coach Jim Zorn said today after practice at Redskins Park.

It'll be interesting to see how Colt Brennan responds next time around -- that's assuming he gets some playing time against the Pats.

That late INT has to be keeping him up at night. Hopefully he won't come out of the gates too reckless.

Supposedly, Colt will start the 2nd half against the Pats and get most of the snaps. But then again, Chase was supposed to play in the first preseason game and he didn't. And Colt was supposed to come in right after Campbell against the Steelers, and he didn't.

No knock against Chase, but I am surprised by Zorn's positive comments about him, having heard so many Zorn knocks against Colt.

It is possible that the Cult of Colt will soon be silenced. Who knew? Way to go, Chase, even if you don't win the battle.

I also noticed that. Interesting. I got to think that Chase now has the inside track, its not like Zorn hold things close to the vest, compared to other NFL coaches.

Also I don't get the height knock, nobody seems to remember that Drew Brees is only 6'0 feet.

ive always been a fan of chase daniel. the kid is a winner, he and maclin pretty much resurrected the entire mizzou football program. daniel is a great leader, with good mobility, and is very accurate. he knows how to move the football downfield and in a hurry. he does lack height and throwing power, but i definitely think he will find a home in the nfl. if its not with the redskins, i would still wish him success.

i am certainly not a cultist, but is it possible that chase is far enough along to overtake a qb that has had a full year in this system? i dont see it. part of me wants to keep them both (PJ5 and CD) and put collins out to pasture. it would certainly be feast or famine from there.

That would make sense except that Collins has looked like the most capable of the Redskins quarterbacks during the preseason and is the only one of the three potential backups that could come in and win a few games right now. Going into the preseason the ideal situation would have been to keep Colt at #3 and stash Daniel on the practice squad. But Daniel may have played himself right out of that possibility and Colt has not looked good in either game. We'll see what happens, but let's be honest, outside of Redskinland there were many questions about Brennan's ability to play at the NFL level. The preseason hype last year for Brennan was based upon a limited sample size, which was further skewed by the fact that he managed to complete some ill-advised passes that were unlikely to be successful on a regular basis in the NFL.

***K that. Collins has already proven his worth to the organization. It's time to kick JC to the curb - going on five years, and this first-rounder STILL can't find his fanny with both hands!

Pop's just not a big fan of Jason Campbell. Hard to believe, I know, with Jason being 17 for 35 and 257 yards with no TDs this preseason.

For the record, I'm not as convinced that Jason Campbell absolutely isn't the answer for us at quarterback. Personally, I'd say I'm about 60% convinced that Campbell will be somewhere else in 2010. I could be wrong.

We'll see who's right in about five months.

P.S. -- let's not forget that none other than Dan Snyder and Vinny Cerrato weren't convinced either when they tried to get Mark Sanchez and Jay Cutler...

I don't think anyone would argue that Campbell is a franchise QB (not yet at least), but he's certainly not as awful as Pops implied.
