Gibbs Getting up to Speed

After a week of studying film, our lead scout surveys the Week 5 landscape and
weighs in with his picks for the weekend's potential stars, the best matchups,
the games to watch and more.
Has the NFL game passed Joe Gibbs by? The Redskins' coaching staff has been
continually under fire regarding its preparation, adjustments and clock
management. There's a consensus among coaches and scouts around the league that
the game has changed, and some aren't sure Gibbs & Co. have adjusted.
When Gibbs left coaching 12 years ago, teams did not have the technology they do
today. Teams now have software that can tell them every tendency of an opponent,
as well as quality-control coaches whose entire job is to study those
tendencies.

The Redskins run a simple offense with a philosophy of doing what they do best,
without worrying about what the defense does. That worked well when Gibbs had
John Riggins and superior personnel, but today's defenses make adjustments from
game to game, series to series and play to play.
Last week, Cleveland's linebackers felt, based on their scouting reports, that
they could guess correctly what play the Redskins were going to run 80-90
percent of the time.
But let's not write Gibbs off this early. He is still a great coach, and there's
no reason to think he won't make the adjustments to get up to speed with
technology and get the Redskins back on track.

I think I read somewhere that Zampese lives in California, gets the game tape at the beginning of each week, looks over a few things and sends his notes to Gibbs on Thursday

The technology deficit is something that concerned me when I started thinking about it. Hopefully, Gibbs has some computer geeks on his staff that help him sort and process all the statistical information that coaches are using these days. They have a few young guys, Bill Lazor, Kirk Olivadotti and Coy Gibbs, working as assistants, and I would assume they do the bulk of the computer stuff, preparing stats and breakdowns for the coaches. I'm sure the scouting department does a fair portion of that as well. The only question is, does Gibbs put all of that information to good use?

i always thought the rams offense was designed by martz who based it on gibbs offense?

It does have some similarities except Gibbs runs more max protection with 2 and 3 tight end sets. But the whole idea of the single back formation with shifts and motion all really started with Gibbs. And Martz does alot of that.

Basically both Gibbs and Martz follow the same famous Air Coryell system. Gibbs being more dedicated to the run.
