WPost Email: Jansen's Off Crutches

When Jon Jansen walked out of Redskins Park on Monday afternoon, he no longer had the crutches that had become part of his wardrobe. Jansen limped to his car, but it felt good to finally walk on his own. Jansen's rehabilitation from a torn Achilles tendon is going well.

The Redskins tackle suffered the season-ending injury in Washington's first exhibition game - "It's going a lot better," Jansen said. "I'm able to walk around now. I'm still having a little bit of a limp, but I'm still working on that. Right now we're still waiting for it to heal up a little bit more. And then, in another two or three weeks, I'll be able to do some light jogging."

On Oct. 27, about the three-month mark from the surgery, Jansen
will visit a specialist in Charlotte for a checkup. Jansen plans to start jogging by November, and in December start strengthening the leg through weightlifting.

The loss of Jansen was significant because Jansen was one of the league's best run-blockers and Coach Joe Gibbs stresses running the ball. The Redskins hoped to withstand Jansen's loss with the guidance of offensive line coach Joe Bugel. Linemen Kenyatta Jones and Ray Brown have had their moments, but Washington's running game has struggled without Jansen.

"It's been as frustrating as it was early on. Even if they were 5-0, I would still be frustrated I couldn't be a part of it," Jansen said. Now that the team is 1-4, "I feel bad because I can't be a part of getting it fixed. It's frustrating on a lot of levels."

The 6-foot-6, 305-pound Jansen still looks to be in playing shape because he has made sure not to gain weight. Jansen works on his upper body in the weight room and doesn't go crazy with junk food.

"Whatever I do from the waist up to burn calories, I do," Jansen said.

It's great to hear that. He's making good progress and staying in shape. Just goes to show how committed he is to his team and the organization. I expect Jansen to make the Pro Bowl next year, no doubt.

Can't wait to see him back on the field next year. He's a Redskin, for sure.

Next year..?

Hell, if he's off crutches he's probably better than Ray Brown who should be in a wheel chair!

Needless to say Jansen was a HUGE loss. He's perfect for this offense too, gotta feel bad for the guy, I'm sure it's killing him watching the team struggle.
