Redskins Off-season moves up to the draft

So, first this thread may lead to rehashes but the goal is to look at the off season so far. To look at how the FO has handled bringing in talent or the lack thereof, from the 1st day of FA up to now.

I find it interesting that we have brought in competition at nearly every position except Safety, and WR. I would like to read into that that the dynamic duo (MS/KS) are confident of our WR corp and feels there is good competition already at the safety position.

Here are the transactions from Jan till now from NFL.com:

RB - Marcus Mason cut.
RB - Ladell Betts cut.
RB/ST - Rock Cartwright cut.

OT (kinda) - Stephon Heyer re-signed/restricted free agent.
DT - Anthony Montgomery re-signed/restricted free agent.
DE - Phillip Daniels re-signed/unrestricted free agent (two-year contract).
DE/LB - Chris Wilson re-signed/restricted free agent (one-year contract).
Everything - LB?- Lorenzo Alexander re-signed/restricted free agent (three-year contract).
DT Kedric Golston - re-signed

SIGNED
QB - Rex Grossman signed/unrestricted free agent (one-year contract).
TE - Sean Ryan signed/unrestricted free agent (one-year contract).
RB - Willie Parker signed/unrestricted free agent (one-year contract).
RB - Larry Johnson signed/unrestricted free agent (three-year contract).
OL - Artis Hicks signed/unrestricted free agent (three-year contract).
C - Kory Lichtensteiger signed.
DT - Anthony Bryant signed.
DT - Howard Green signed.
DL - Greg Peterson signed
CB/ST - Phillip Buchanon signed (one-year contract).
NT - Maake Kemoeatu signed (two-year contract).
PK - Justin Medlock signed.
LS - Nick Sundberg signed.
P - Josh Bidwell signed.

TRADED
What position is this guy??? - Donovan McNabb traded (for two draft picks).

RESTRICTED FREE AGENTS
CB Carlos Rodgers - 1st Rd Tender
S Reed Doughty - 2nd Rd Tender
LB Rocky McIntosh - 1st Rd Tender

FREE AGENTS
Quinton Ganther declared free agent.
Ethan Albright declared free agent.
Renaldo Wynn declared free agent.

Re: Redskins Off-season moves up to the draft

CRedskins, nice thread. Honestly we've made so many moves since Shanahan and Allen took over, it's hard to keep track of it all. We have lots of threads on this site for good discussion, but sometimes these reference/informational threads are the most helpful and the ones people come back to most often.

The other day I was reading how Shanahan thought Mike Williams might have a good opportunity at RG, and then I was all 'well what about Randy Thomas', and then my brain was all 'we cut him, dummy, don't you remember?' And I was all 'oh yeah. Shut up brain or I'll stab you with a q tip.'

So thanks.

Thanks.

We have actually made a "ton" of moves, a lot for depth or remolding the team to fit Shanny's image. It is definitely a far different off-season approach then any other under Dan Snyder (although I don't remember Marty's first off-season from this aspect).
I can't say that one move reeks of championship (except McNabb), but neither do they come off as a desperate attempt to make the status quo work.

Ditto, great post that really puts things in perspective when adds/cuts can be viewed together in one list.

Re: Redskins Off-season moves up to the draft

solid thread CRedskins. its nice to see all of the moves thus far in one spot.

punched a few numbers and here is what i found:

10 cut - average age - 29
13 new redskins signed - average age - 28

so much for a run on youth. todd collins really drove up the cut average, dude is frickin 38.

Re: Redskins Off-season moves up to the draft

great thread CRedskins. maybe you can update this thread to include the rest of the moves we make in the offseason.

i don't think the lack of bringing in WRs or Safeties has as much to do with Shanahan feeling confident in the guys we have as it does with there simply not being any safeties or WRs in the free agent market who would constitute upgrades over the guys we have. i certainly think both positions will be addresssed in some way over the course of the offseason.

Re: Redskins Off-season moves up to the draft

Excellent thread.. I think we've had a good offseason from both the subtraction and addition perspectives. There were a couple of players I was surprised we didn't make moves on (Marshall, Gaither, Dansby) but I trust Shanahallen much more than I ever did with Snyderatto.

I'm not dead but this team is dead to me...but now that McCloughan is here they may have new life!

Jay Gruden = Zorny McSpurrier
Kirk Cousins = Next Grossman

The fact that none of the following guys have yet been traded-Rogers, Rocky, Landry, McIntosh, Kelly, Moss, Carter, Campbell is the most surprising part of the off-season so far. I know that combinations of all these players have been involved in discussions. Some more actively discussed than others.

I know we have seen a couple of trades, but from your perspective do teams seem more tentative on these "lesser" names because a) this draft seems to be deep, and b) they have Friday to shake out what deals they actually want to make?

I think you're right on both counts. I also don't know how stubborn the Skins have been in their negotiations
