Redskins Learn Nuances of Cut-Blocking
I'm sure I'm not alone when I say I used to hate Shanahan's Broncos because of their cut-blocking...but now I'm its biggest fan

"The tactic is a major reason why the Denver Broncos ranked among the NFL's top 10 in rushing during 12 of Mike Shanahan's 14 seasons as head coach. It also has been a lightning rod for controversy at times during Shanahan's career.
Because the technique requires an offensive lineman to block a defensive lineman below the waist, it puts the defender at risk of a serious knee or ankle injury. When executed properly, however, it is legal and quite effective." On McNabb's TD pass I saw Trent with a nice cut block, it helps with the passing game too as it opens passing lanes.

Re: Redskins Learn Nuances of Cut-Blocking
Yea,we might as well enjoy it now.
As soon as Shanny's Zone Cut Block scheme sweeps ESPN's Cowboys all the way to the superbowl..we can expect a rule change to be instituded. Specially,if we beat brady and the patriots in the big game...lol I'm just kidding..lol

Re: Redskins Learn Nuances of Cut-Blocking
In high school we were taught to cut block, especially in pass protection. Therefore it is hard for me to condemn the practice. I can understand how defenders would be unhappy with the tactic, though.

I also think your head has to be up or near the defender's hip, not down at their feet to be legal (and safer). The 80s 49ers did leg whips and much worse tactics of blocking. As long as we're not doing Flozell Adams-type blocks because we're getting beat...it's not an issue. Coach Shanahan knows what he's going, I have no doubts our players will do it properly and we'll have a great running game this year.

There already might be.Last night in the Giants game there a few holding calls and Gruden caught the fact the there are 2 officials in the Offensive backfield now watching the linemen. There is not much of a difference between a chop and a cut but how would you feel if it wipedout Orakpo(sp) or Haynsworth bet it would be dirty then. |

Re: Redskins Learn Nuances of Cut-Blocking
It's really only dangerous if a defender is engaged, and I'm pretty sure it's a 10 or 15 yards penalty.

Re: Redskins Learn Nuances of Cut-Blocking
Shanahan learn that technique from Bob McKittrick old OL coach from the 49ers (dead). Just ask Howie Long how he liked it? He once threatened McKittrick to kick his ass because of it.

Re: Redskins Learn Nuances of Cut-Blocking
The NFL is a copy-cat league, seeing the success Shanahan's offenses' have had with this particular scheme, is there any wonder why more teams don't utilize it?

Re: Redskins Learn Nuances of Cut-Blocking
Then you would say it's fair to asume it won't make many friends among the leagues defenders?

I knew you'd all come along. Just like you'd all fall in love with Chris Pronger if hell freezes over and he becomes a Cap.
Once you own something, you'll say you'll like it all along. (apparently one study about confabulation data showed such behavior among people.

And yeah I'm not a fan of cut blocking either but obviously we are going to be using it so I have no choice but to sit back and hope we don't critically injure some guy on D and have to face massive backlash because of it. |
