What hurt us last night, was not having Rocky!
He's currently tied for 17th in the League in Tackles with 46(1 sack) and that's after missing last nights game. He was averaging 9.2 tackles a game before last nights game.
Which would have put him at 55 tackles and ranked 7th in the League behind Landry,Mayo,Fletcher,Timmons,Pollard and D.J. Williams. Instead,we had B.B. Blades in his place. Anybody want to guess, how many tackles he had in last nights game? He had 1 tackle... Which takes me to my 2nd point. This is more reason we take a shot @Merriman when he becomes available. We don't have the depth @LB to overcome missed time in games or injuries. I realize that Merriman is best suited @ going after the QB,but having him on the team, would allow Haslett to shuffle around the LB core without a great loss imo. I also realize that we were in a lot of Dime/Nickel type coverages with 1 LB,but both Fletcher and Orakpo managed to have a FF in the game and A.Carter recovered 1 as well. Not to mention,we could have used Merriman on the line standing up,like last night as well in those disguised coverages on manning.. He's 6'4" 265 lbs I'm betting Merriman could have got 1 tackle...lol So put me in the camp of hoping we get this guy for very cheap, when he is released and becomes available.... Plus,if he works out well for us this season...that's one less draft pick we need to use on LB's with him relatively young at 26 years old.

I hate saying this, but I'd rather just switch back to the 4-3 till we get more 3-4 personnel here. I mean honestly, we're shooting ourselves in the foot.
3-4: 32nd overall 4-3: 10th overall

There's a bit more to the story, like turnovers, points allowed, and of course W/L record.

Of course, but I just don't know. I like the 3-4 at times, other times I absolutely hate it.

Also, last year we ended with a -11 turnover difference, so far this year we have a +5 turnover difference. Last year we had a TOTAL of 17 takeaways. So far this year we have 11 takeaways. We scored one of our touchdowns on an extremely short field, thanks to Rak's strip fumble. We won the Dallas game thanks to an aggressive takeaway minded defense. There are good and bad to everything, and if we had had just the one Kareem Moore INT run back for a TD, the game would have been a different animal. [I hate total yards cited for SO Many reasons] |

But, the goal going to the 3-4 was to specifically improve turnovers and points allowed, along with closing out games. Other than Houston, I would say we have improved those areas, total yardage stats aside.

The 3-4 is just an alignment. The SCHEME that utilizes it is supposed to generate turnovers and stop the points from coming. But hey, Steve Spagunolo was able to produce a nasty Giants D with the 4-3 alignment. His scheme was aggressive and creative, unlike BLACHE's.

Re: What hurt us last night, was not having Rocky!
What hurt us last night was our DB's / Safety not being able to catch a football thrown right into there hands.
HB Blades didn't kill us! Of course he's not Rocky, but he's the next man up and certainly didn't cost us the game. Merriman is a used up has been. Quote:

Some people though L.T. was a used up "has been",then he went to the jets. Some people thought Julius Peppers was a used up has been, then he went to the Bears. The point I'm making is...some players just need a change of scenery,to get back to what they once were.... And Merriman,is younger than all 3 guys I have as examples above. I'm not saying he will immediately become a hall of famer if we sign him.... But the risk of signing this guy for pennies in Free agency is worth the reward we could get if Merriman can go back to old form. You guys think Orakpo is good? if Merriman went back to the form he once was....Orakpo would be the 2nd best LB on the team... Merriman was an absolute monster beast!! You have to take a shot, even if it's just for this one year to see... You have too... If he did,go back to old form...Our LB core would be unreal!

Merriman's glory days are long gone and over with. At only 26 he's awfully washed up.

to answer the thread title, yes, having Rocky out hurt us IMO. Manning even said so.
