Royal & McCants
yeah I'm from CA but I've been a big Redskin fan for a long long time ... can anyone tell me why Robert Royal is not more utilized on this team, especially as a receiver. This dude is awesome. Taylor Jacobs??? lose this Florida bozo product of Spurrier and stay with McCants, McCants is awesome and he showed it in the 2003 season.

I think we may see Royal's role expand next year. He's definitely established himself as a great redzone target.
As for McCants sounds like he's on his way out and Jacobs will see more time next year. Welcome to the board by the way! |

I also think that Royal is a valuable red zone target and in another thread I mentioned that McCants was a huge touchdown maker in 2003. I guess maybe I wasn't smoking something when I thought that.
On a side note, this has been a great use of my time during the work day. I believe that I've honestly been reading this for about 2/3 of my day at work. Thanks for having something worthwhile!

I was excited about Royal when he first came to the team. I think we'll look to replace Kozlowski and the newcomer may prove to be stiff competition for Royal as far as the starting position is concerned. Nothing's wrong with that. As far as McCants, goes, I got a feeling he'll be traded. We probably won't get much more than a fifth or sixth rounder though. Yes, everyone knows about his production as a red zone WR, but it's not to common to have a third string WR not chipping in on special teams. And that's just the reason Jacobs stays and 'your boy' doesn't.

Jacobs has some talent. Why call him a FL bozo?
Royal had 10 receptions this year and 4 TDs. So, he is being utilized. He's not the greatest blocker in the world, which keeps him out of certain formations (ie he's one dimensional). McCants is a bad practice player, but seems to come up with some big plays when he's in the games. He's got to practice better AND find some way to contribute on special teams before he'll be put on the active list on a regular basis (if he's even around next year).

Let's look objectively at Royal and Cooley for just a moment.
Neither of them is a great blocker by any stretch of the imagination. Both of them have good hands and will catch just about anything they can get their hands on. Neither of them is a "deep threat" kind of TE. Both of them have shown an understanding of red zone offense and the ability to get open in that kind of constrained field. What the Redskins have now is two tight ends that are pretty much the same player which means that there are dimensions of the game opened up by certain kinds of tight ends that will not be available to the Redskins when either of these guys is on the field. Maybe - MAYBE - the team would be better off with one of these two guys (whichever you prefer) and another TE that offers something else to the offense? Just a thought.

I think he is referring to all of the promising U of Florida Wide recievers that have been busts in the NFL. I am not sure if you are aware but the U.of Florida receivers have a bad reputation in the NFL, which is why Jacobs slipped in his draft. Alot of it is attributed to Spurriers system (when he was coach there) and that his receivers and QB's have great success in the NCAA but that success has not translated well to the NFL. I personally think it is not the offensive systems but the big jump in talent of defenses in college to the pro's. Almost all of the NFl teams have great players on D. In college only a hand ful of teams are really that good. Below is an article that touches the subject of Taylor and the U of F receivers bad rep. http://www.nfl.com/draft/story/6282615 |

Plain and simple they can only carry 4 wrs a game maybe 5 if they figure a way to stretch another position.
Coles-lock(starter) Garnder-lock(starter) Thrash-lock(decent 3rd or 4th with major ST contributions) Jacobs(decent 3rd or 4th with major ST contributions) late in the year auditioned Brown for what I assume to be Morton's role(doesn't look good for Chad does it?) and early in the eyar they kepy an extra lineman sicne they were having problems there. McCants doesn't contribute on ST and apparently dogs it in practice. Gibbs is never gonna play a guy like that and take away a game day spot from someone else. |
