Was Samuels Worth The Contract???

I was wondering if you guys think samuels deserved a big contract?? He had fallen the last couples years, but did he have a good season last year????

If we didn't another teams was and we could not afford to loss him. His problem was in the lack of blocking schems when Spur man was here. He only allowed one sack last year.

It all begins with the O line........and good OT are hard to find. I think he was worth it, he played decent under Bugel last year................

He had 2 years of no coaching under Spurrier so naturally regressed.

Last season under Buges he improved, and whilst still not at the Pro Bowl level of play he had previously achieved, and im sure that under another off season of coaching he will reach that level again.

Left Tackle is the key position on the OL and Samuels is definitely worth his deal. Coupled with a fully recovered Jansen i think we have one of the top tackle combos in the NFL.

it wasn't coles's fault. front office's for letting him go. he didn't have to be traded.

Just like the person above said, Samuels was a matter of necessity. Either we pay for it now or PRAY that we could sign or mold a rookie. Both of those cases would be good.

i think samuels definately deserverd his big contract. he has helped the skins more than once and it was time to pay him back. plus he is a pretty good player, yea , his play slipped under spurierr but it started coming back last year and i think this year he will be even better.

he was worth it in that he is extremely cheap for the first few years, he is relatively young, 27 i believe, has helped us out in the past, has been a pro bowler, and is a good LT, which is rare. if we did cut him or whatever, that would have been another hole to fill, and would have meant more turnover for the team, loss of continuity along the o line, etc. def. worth it

You need to think about Samuels' contract in the context of the team. The QB next year will be Patrick Ramsey. All of the potential he has shown some people here which convinces them that he will be a Hall of Fame QB some day is in his arm and none of it is in his legs. Peo-le here have criticized Drew Bledsoe for being immobile and being a "sitting duck" in the pocket; Ramsey is only marginally better! SO...

If you were going to cut Samuels - that was the only real alternative given his cap number and the huge hit that Coles was going to give the Skins based on the Coles/Moss trade - you had to be 110% guaranteed mortal-lock certain that you had a fully competent LT to put in there on day one. Because if not, Patrick Ramsey would be staring up at clouds with a dazed look in his eyes before Thanksgiving.

Is there a reserve OT on the squad ready to step in and be a fully competent performance at LT? I didn't see one rotate through the RT merry-go-round last year, but I'd be happy to defer to the coaching staff on that question. But if the answer isn't, "Absolutely! Joe Flabeetz is ready to do the job on every snap of the ball," then all the Skins could do is suck it up and pay Samuels what he asked for.

Oh, and remember, they could have had him for about $3M less in bonus money with the last year of the deal as a team option had they not decided to "play hardball" with him in the negotiations in January...

I agree with this. I think we definitely overpaid for Samuels, but I still think is was the right move.

The fact is it was the restructures of his contract that killed us. He had so much accumulated bonus money that his release fee was always so high. So cutting/trading him was never really a viable option, and thus the Skins never had any real leverage. Plus Samuels played just well enough to keep his market value high. The Skins really had no choice but to pay him what he wanted especially after that other lineman (Jones?) signed his big deal. I know Gibbs values OLinemen, but I'd guess he wasn't too thrilled about giving Samuels more than double what Jansen and Thomas got. Especially given what's been said regarding Pierce/Washington and Smoot/Springs.

I don't think Samuels went out of his way to help us here, but I can't say I really blame him either. I hate to say it but I think his agent (Sexton?) did a good job for him. I have no hard feelings towards CS, it was a mess the Skins created and he just took advantage. I just hope he comes to play.

When you consider that Jonas Jennings just got 6 years and $36 million or something crazy like that, Samuels' deal doesn't seem so bad. Walter Jones was the first domino to fall and he definitely drove the market price for LTs up. I wish the Redskins' front office had committed to Samuels back in January before Jones got his deal, because once the Seahawks signed him Samuels and his agent Sexton started asking for a lot more money, and they got it.

It's obvious though that the price for left tackles is going up big time, and I'll bet maybe as early as next year Samuels will seem like a bargain. When it comes right down to it, we really did have to pay the price. If we're going to have Ramsey turning his back to the D running play-action passes, we're REALLY going to need solid tackles. Samuels was a must, even though he was expensive. There was no choice.

And thank God for Jon Jansen's return.
