Defensive Free Agent

I heard from one source that we are not going to sign any other free agent before the draft, but I have heard rumors that Trevor Pryce will be released shortly. He is coming off of an injury-plagued season and wants to show that he is still a beast to be reckoned with. Personally I would love to see him with us to pair with Griffin. He may not be that pricey but you never know. At least we can try and get him in a redskins uniform. Just want to hear what you all have to say about that acquisition.

Based on the offseason so far, I would have to disagree with you. While we would love the new look, I think we can all agree that Joe is sitting back now, and not making any big moves.

Would you employ Joe Gibbs as your accountant?

I don't think the Redskins strategy is to be close-minded though, note that Gibbs does not "anticipate" making any more changes but if a situation should arise - such as a top-line defensive line player becoming available for the right price, I don't think they would snub it.

I would love to have Pryce on the team, along with Patrick Surtain. The problem is the salary cap. We barely have enough space to sign our rookles, much less sign anyone else.

Isn't there a separate salary cap for rookie signings? Maybe I'm just smoking something, but I thought that rookies fell under a different cap? Anybody know for sure?

Re: Defensive Free Agent

i think once we move gardner, we will be approx 4 mil under the cap, and i see us probably getting 1 more FA. but ill think itl be after the june cap casualties. yet someone will have to intrigue gibbs first with the right price

Re: Defensive Free Agent

The league has ways to make room so you can sign your rookies. I've NEVER seen a team draft a rookie and fail to sign them because they were out of cap room. There's some way they can fit them in. Someone can explain better than me, but you're right.

Actually you both are wrong, the rookie cap is a cap with in the main salary cap. It is a cap with in a cap. Teams will have to restructure salaries or cut players if they do not have enough over all salary cap space to sign their rookies.
The rookie cap was a clever move by the owners to keep rookie salaries in check. They can tell a money hungry rookie, " look this is the maximum I can pay you due to the rookie salary cap."
But it is part of the overall salary cap.

Thanks for the info. I won't be counting on any major free agent signings then.

Re: Defensive Free Agent

Daseal:

Back in the 90s - soon after the cap happened - teams had to adjust to the cap. The 49ers were so far over the cap that on draft day they had to cut players or else forfeit draft picks because they would not have been able to sign the picks because they did not have any cap room left. That was even if the picks would have agreed to the CBA mandated league minimums.

The Skins are not in great shape with regard to the cap, but they are a lot better off than that.

Re: Defensive Free Agent

maybe a one or two year contract, but i agree doesn't look like we are in a real position to do anything. but maybe by doing this we will avert a real blown up later.
granted salary cap is not one of my strong points. surtain would be nice but it's a dream because he will want some cash. and we are alittle short. we do need some line help, cb help lb, help and i really would like them to get elton brand guard out of va.

Re: Defensive Free Agent

Did you mean Elton Brown?
I agree with you that we need to start to develop a new guard or two. While I like Derrick Dockery and he is servicable, he has been slow to develop and this may be his last chance to shine or he will get replaced. In today's NFL, you cannot live with just average players. Dockery needs to lift himself to the next level.

Re: Defensive Free Agent

Im sure Pryce will be cut, espeically since the bronocs just traded for and signed the browns dline from last year. Pryce could be another incentive based contract candidate. Of course, the broncos can afford to keep him and might since him and brown are both coming off injuries.

Re: Defensive Free Agent

id rather get a young smaller de in the 270lb range that can rush the edges in pass down situations, ive been hoping we draft swancutt (oregon st.) i think it is... but if we do want a bigger de, than i hope we draft canty (virgina) ... either one of those should be available with our third round. canty might go sooner than our third but he would have been a high choice if it weren't for his senior season ending injury.
