Cowboys May Cut DT Glover and/or DE Ellis
Rumors are spreading like wildfire in Texas that the Cowboys may cut La'Roi Glover and/or Greg Ellis. Sounds crazy? Well, the Cowboys just signed DT Jason Ferguson, drafted DT/DE Marcus Spears, and drafted DE DeMarcus Ware. Moreover, the Cowboys are shifting to a 3-4 defense and with the pricey Ellis and Glover already on the roster, the additions of Spears, Ware, and Ferguson may spell the end of one of either Glover or Ellis' careers in Dallas.
Rumors coming out of Fox Sports News (http://msn.foxsports.com/nfl/team/67043), Cowboys blogs (granted, they're just blogs) and Profootballtalk.com (not exactly a shining example of journalism) indicate that one or both Glover and Ellis will be cut. These rumors, are bolstered by the above-referenced signings. Moreover, a 3-4 defense requires a big NT and Glover is more of a pass-rushing, tweaner DT at just 280 pounds. Considering that Glover is scheduled to earn a salary of $4.7 million (for a $6 million cap figure) and has gone to the Pro Bowl the past five seasons, it's unlikely that the team could afford or Glover would tolerate him sitting on the bench. My question therefore is, do we go after either Ellis or Glover if they are cut? They won't come cheap (which will likely mean cutting someone we don't want to lose) and they're getting old. But, they're studs. As tempting as I find it, I don't think we should sign them due to their cost/age. What do you guys think? |

Re: Cowboys May Cut DT Glover and/or DE Ellis
This is an economics question more than anything else. Glover is a better DT than anyone on the Skins' roster at the moment - including Cornelius Griffin. Ellis is at least as good as - and probably better than any DE on the roster.
But to sign them - and the draft picks - will mean cutting a bunch of other folks on the roster. To make room for Glover and a fat signing bonus and salary, you will have to cut more than some free agent signee who was brought in as training camp cannon fodder. So, the coaching staff/front office mavens need to figure out the economics of this situation and see if they can afford to try to get these guys into the fold and who will have to be jettisoned in order to make room for them. I suspect it will not be an easy fit, but until I knew the economics and the cap implications, I couldn't ignore two guys both of whom would upgrde the DL. Tough call in my mind...

Re: Cowboys May Cut DT Glover and/or DE Ellis
yeah that would be great but i don't think we can afford it, but if we do man what a defense, unstoppable.
I would like to adress offense if we can afford it!, one dominant player on o-line is what i want, 3-4 probowlers if we get another O-lineman to take the inside job. that would make the offseason a success in my eyes Does anyone know the range the cap will be at after cuts and signing players. I know no one KNOWS but just an idea. are we under allittle or over alot? |

I think this would be an "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" situation. I think that Ellis at DE might come cheaper than Glover. If it happens, I say we proceed with caution and give them the same deal we gave every other free agent. Lay down some groundwork and let them pick.

Interesting, I was thinking of starting a similar thread but with Simeon Rice ($10 million) and Anthony McFarland ($4 million)
Again, as has already been mentioned here it's more a business question than a football question at this point

Re: Cowboys May Cut DT Glover and/or DE Ellis
Adding Glover would give us a nasty pair of DTs, and Ellis would easily be our top DE.
If either or both become available, I'd think the Redskins would have to give them a long, hard look. |

If Canuck is around, do you think that cutting Gardner, Bowen and Morton would give us enough possible room for either/or?

With the way deals are backloaded it wouldn't cost us much this year for one of these guys.

I don't like the idea of long time cowpies joining the team but it's hard to deny either guy, especially glover, would be a pretty decent upgrade and addition to the d-line rotation if the price is right.

Re: Cowboys May Cut DT Glover and/or DE Ellis
The problem is, there is no reason for Glover or Ellis to sign a cheap, short-term, or incentive-based deal. They're still young enough (if somewhat long in the tooth) to get monster deals and they know it. They put up big numbers and play big as well. Plus, pass-rushing D-linemen are among the highest paid players. Someone will pick them up for 5+ years and Glover will get at least an $7 million signing bonus.

Re: Cowboys May Cut DT Glover and/or DE Ellis
if we would get somebody i wish it was simeon rice or glover. if we are going to sacrifice our money it better damn be worth it. i know that we don't have the money but we can cut some players to make room lik barrow, gardner, morton, hall, bowen and probably mccants--i will like mccants though, but anything to get us to the playoffs.

Re: Cowboys May Cut DT Glover and/or DE Ellis
We need to save any money we may have left and spend it on any upgrade we can do for our offense. If I remember correctly that was our problem last year. I don't know which position we could up grade now but that should be were we look if we are thinking about spending any more money.
