Booo to ESPN
It sucks that ESPN so far hasen't show any of the Concacaf's Gold Cup. Man, have some national pride. So far we've beaten the commie out of Cuba and taught those Canucks a thing or two. I mean the US finally has a good soccer team. Go USA!

Re: Booo to ESPN
I had no idea anyone here was a soccer fan. I've been watching the games on Telefutura too. Brings back memories of the last World Cup. I was living in Mexico City and watched the U.S. beat Mexico at a restaurant along with 300 Mexicans. Good thing I'm 6'2," 210lbs...they were pretty angry.

I remember hearing that Americans in Mexico at the time of the game had to be extremely cautious of what they did and where they went...But man was that sweet. They can beat us 100 times in a row during qualifiers but to get that win at that time was awesome. |

Re: Booo to ESPN
So it's ESPN's job to buy the rights to every sport on the planet?

Re: Booo to ESPN
No, but they do show the national team on occasion. Given that they do so, and the Spanish language networks are showing the games, why not show them? It's hard to build national support if the national team games aren't on nationally. This is about building fan base outside of me, TAFKAS and NM redskin! It seems like an attitude thing--lots of sports are on ESPN, but soccer doesn't always get on--it's "not really an american sport," unlike lumberjacking and the world's strongest man (who always seems to be Norwegian or something...). Or so it seems to me. C'mon! This is the most popular sport in the world, and we're actually pretty good at it, which comes as a surprise to many people.

Re: Booo to ESPN
I won't lie...I'm not the biggest fan (such a disgrace to my Latino roots I know) I just happen to be taping some games for NY_Skinsfan
Now, lumberjacking...that's a whole different story. Great Outdoor Games baby!!! What!

Anyway, ESPN has no excuse for not showing those games...The Gold Cup is not as important as the qualifiers for the World Cup but they do show a team representing the United States of America. Any team representing their country has a right to be shown on the country's most popular sports network. And now there's some stupid World Baseball League in which they hope to reach the same standard as the World Cup. This is what I find funny. They realize that the World Cup is the most watched Sporting event worldwide so the want to model that and reach that level recognizing how big soccer is in the world...but then people can completely turn their backs a second later saying that soccer is a boring sport and it sucks......pathetic. Btw....thanks TAFKAS |

Re: Booo to ESPN
i'm not the biggest soccer fan, but if ESPN can televise darts (dominated by overweight beer guzzlin' brits), they may as well show the world's most popular sport... especially if the US is actually a force!

Re: Booo to ESPN
The reason they don't show the games is because they can't possibly make any money on them. ESPN is not really about promoting sports but rather about making money. They CAN show fat asses throwing darts and old guys playing pool because the rights to those events are either A) super cheap or B) free. The soccer rights are much more expensive and are not exclusive as has been stated since the Spanish broadcasts are shown on several stations.

Re: Booo to ESPN
I personally like futbol, but face it, it doesn't sell.
American pro soccer is losing money by the truckload. They don't sell out even the soccer-only stadiums. The average ESPN viewer couldn't name three players on Team USA. High production costs. Low payback. Do you expect ESPN to pull their MLB coverage to show these games? Get real. Or poker? They make alot of money because of low production costs. Or maybe show the games off-hours? They'd be better off playing Ronco infomercials. Why can't another network (Fox Sports, TBS, OLN... whatever) who actually may gain viewers assume that responsibility? Do you even know if ESPN was offered the rights to these games? Should ESPN take a financial bath in order to cater to the patriotism of a handful of soccer fans? You're a Redskins fan... You should know all about business decisions. BTW ESPN does some soccer... watch ESPN2 Saturday at 4PM Eastern MLS Chicago vs Columbus. http://sports.espn.go.com/sports/tvl...ory?id=2067444 Last edited by EEich; 07-13-2005 at 03:14 PM. |
