Supplemental Draft
Does anyone know how this draft works? the only thing I understand is that we r going to be in the group of thirteen teams w/6 or less wins. Plus who might be in this draft? Wasn't Domanick Davis of the Texans a supplemental draft pick?

I thought supplemental drafts were only for expansion teams. Im not sure who would be in the draft other than free agents. It sucks we didnt get supplemental picks for the real draft since its based on your free agent pickups to players lost ratio. We picked up the most players through getting rid of picks, youd think we should get soem free picks ya know, heh.

Yes, I've heard of the Supplemental Draft too, but never understood what it was.
I do remember the Giants taking QB Dave Brown from Duke in the first round of a Supplemental draft way back in the early nineties. That's the last time I heard anything about one. |

I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong.
The supplemental draft happens when players become eligible for the draft at a time that doesn't fit the normal schedule. Supplemental drafts occur at varying times, but usually in the summer. There was one during the 2002 season, which was unique. There have been multiple drafts in the same year -- they had four of them in 1985. Supplemental drafts got started in 1977 when Al Hunter, a running back from Notre Dame, was declared scholastically ineligible to play college football. Essentially, Hunter had nowhere to play except for the NFL. So instead of waiting until the 1978 NFL Draft, the league chose to have an extra draft just for him. The league uses the previous draft order to select, and if a team chooses not to selct, they don't have to. If a team selects a player in a supplimental draft, they forfeit the corresponding pick in the next year's draft.

Heres' a little more on this year's draft:
http://www.fanstop.net/public/nflboa...mes;read=57496 I remember when Dallas supplementally drafted Steve Walsh because their rookie coach Jimmy Johnson wanted his quarterback who had helped him win games in college so he figured even though he had a hot young rookie qb anyway he should bring his own guy in...thank goodness the redskins have never had that scenario happen to them. LOL

That's pretty much it, BL, nice job. Players that have lost eligibility or choose to enter the NFL later than the regular draft are included in the supplemental draft.

is there any chance Mike Williams and Clarret could be in the supplemental draft if the new ruling next week goes against them? I know WR isn't a weakness but how sweet would it be if we got the first pick in that draft and were able to select Williams who's pretty much a bonafide top 15 pick in the regular draft.

If the new ruling goes against Clarrett then they will be ineligible for the draft, but of course Clarett will appeal to the Supreme Court. If the SC rules in Clarett's favor, then the players would be immediately eligible in which case the NFL would hold the supplemental draft. I don't think the NFL will win, primarily because it doesn't need any artificial barriers. The NFL normally does a good job of weeding out the guys who can't really play. So high schoolers are welcome to try, but most teams won't waste a pick on a kid who may or may not be ready, there's enough uncertainty already.

If we were to pick up, say Mike Williams, then we have to forfit our first round pick next year right?

Correct.
It would be worth it because we should be drafting in the bottom half of the draft next year. WR Williams is a top 6 player in this draft. It is a joke the NFL is going to court next week to say WR Mike Williams is not physically ready for the NFL. If the NFL wins this court decision and the following in the Supreme Court, Clarrett and Williams would not be eligible for the 2004 Supplemental draft either. They would have to sit out another year and wait for 2005. The NFL should lose this ruling in the Supreme Court. However with the political influence the NFL has and these two players do not, the NFL could win next week. Then the NFL should eventually lose in the US Supreme Court. But the 2004 Draft will have already happened because there is not enought time to appeal and have a ruling by the US supreme court before the Draft. The NFL hopes that happens, it would buy them another year.. If Clarrett and Williams win next week, the top 10 picks in the draft will be greatly affected, because Williams is a top 10 pick. If the Clarett ruling is overturned Clarett could easily file for an injunction to keep the draft from happening till the case is seen. This would put a fire under the supreme court's ass to actually take the case, and take it quick. Angry football fans can do a whole lot when we band together. As of now there are 20 some seperate sects, but see how powerful we can be when we band together!
Williams a top 10 prospect? He's #3 on my WR board alone. No less overall board. |

why would we have to give up a pick next year and why would it be a 1st rounder? why would any team pick from this draft if that was the case.

As stated earlier, any pick used in the supplemental draft is taken from the teams draft picks for the following year. We would only give up a first if we bid a first round pick to take him. We could wait and hope no one else uses a first, then we could use a second. Or, we could wait and hope no one uses a second and pick him with our third, etc. etc. I also think the draft is done on a bidding process - each team faxes in who they want to draft in what round and the player is awarded to the highest pick bid. But don't quote me on that. |

If Mike Williams was in teh supplemental draft I doubt he would fall to the third or fourth round. Im sure ith other drafts its just kidna known thta no one is goign to pick a player in the first couple rounds.
