You really think he wont ask to have number 81 if he comes here. If Danny boy had the guts to ask for numbers, I think KWII will.

Are there any webpages that say what improvements will be in 05, or is it all still a secret. Man I cant wait for the new one to come out...Im more excited about the draft, but partially to see who we will get for madden.

A little birdy told me that they are planning on bulking up on the franchise/owner mode with the hard drive. Nothing in stone though because sales of the hard drive haven't gone as well as hoped so far and Madden will most likely ship before GT4 so it may not make it to gold. Sorry I don't have more info, but I promise as I get info I'll pass it on here. |

It just seems to me that some numbers like 33, 44, 28, 81, 9, 7, and when Jimoh retires 23 should not be worn again. If Winslow wears 81 it should only be if Monk approaches him and says "I want you to wear this number". Similar to what Magic did when Malone joined the Lakers. Magic offered to take his number 32 down from the rafters and give it to Karl Malone. Malone was smart enough to choose a different number. And I'd like to think Winslow would do the same, but something tells me he'd want the number and the "pressure" associated with wearing that number

He can ask all he wants, do you really think Gibbs would let someone wear #81?

I dont think it would be up to Gibbs, theres nothing stopping him from wearing the number is there? Other then out of respect he should ask for permission first.

It would be a PR nightmare for Winslow and the team if Winslow chose to wear #81... unless he received permission from Art Monk himself.
I wouldn't be surprised if Winslow got booed at FedEx if he came trotting out of the tunnel wearing Monk's #81. |

He would definitly have to ask Monk, thats a given. But I think the thing with numbres is just having the guts (or disrespect) to ask. I cant see a player saying no.

Do you think, then, that Winslow would have the cajones to ask Monk if he could wear #81?
Even if Monk gave Winslow permission to wear #81, do you think there would still be a lot of outraged Redskins fans, simply because Winslow had the gall to ask for Monk's number? Like you said, wouldn't that in and of itself be a little disrespectful-- that he would think he's worthy to wear the number without having played a single snap in the NFL? Where does everyone else stand on this? |

Look at the reaction when Matthews tried to wear #9 and Wuerffel tried wearing #7.
There's absolutely no way Winslow would get away with wearing #81, especially with Gibbs back. Monk is just too fresh in the minds of the fans, I have no doubt he would get booed off the field if he tried to wear #81. Especially with his perceived attitude problem, taking a legend's number would do nothing to squash those perceptions and would only throw fuel on the fire. I don't know who it would be up to officially, but with Gibbs being the team president I'm sure he would at least have a say in matters like that. |

There are only so many numbers a position can wear. I have no problems with duplicate numbers myself. Personally, when I played soccer I was pretty attached to my #13. Wasn't the end of the world if I didn't get it one season, but I really liked to have it. If I was told I couldn't wear it because someone who retired a few years ago had it, I might be upset. There are tons of Redskins greats, we can't cut out 30 numbers, I mean damn. We have more than that many people coming to camp!
I mean, there is definitly a respect factor to asking, just like Fred Smoot did with Deion Sanders. He asked him if he could wear 21, Deion said sure. However, if we were to get KWII who knows, maybe he'd shadow Monk. He has the potential to be great. Is that what people are afraid of? |

big difference between Deion's history with the club and Monks'. Deion had more years being an enemy as a cowboy than as a member of the redskins but Monk was a productive part of the team for 14 years I believe. Last edited by skinsfanthru&thru; 04-18-2004 at 01:53 PM. |

I dont think it was that big of a deal when Shane and Danny wore 9 and 7. Everyoen just laughed at them. I had more of a sense of them being made fun of becuase no one beleived they could live up to the number, more so then people being outraged. The difference with KWII is that he could live up to his expectations and be another great Skin that wore 81. A lot of you guys grew up when Monk was in his prime so its easier to see where your coming from, but I grew up then to and I wont think any less of Monk because someone else wore 81. 81 is a pretty popular number for receivers around the league. Anyone know what number Winslows father wore?
If Jarod Payton gets drafted by the Bears, you think they'll let him wear 34? Id like to see the bears draft him in one of the later rounds. The kids got a lot heart. He wears his dads jersey everywhere. (note, that has nothing to do with my argument about monks number, KWII is obvioulsy not his son and is a different scenerio.)
