Great question.

So let's take McClain. He is suspended 10 games. The Cowboys will get relief on their salary cap for the 10 games he misses, so they open up cap space by the amount of whatever game checks he misses out on during the suspension.

But, in order to accrue a "league season" you need to be on the active roster (and not suspended) for at least six games. So if McClain comes back for the last six games and is active on game days, he accrues a league season, and thus is one year closer to free agency.

If he doesn't get through 6 games on the active roster, he does not accrue a league season, meaning his contract with the Cowboys essentially extends by one year. It's like being held back in 2nd grade to repeat it after failing too many classes.

In the event he does not accrue the league season, his 2016 salary would essentially become his 2017 salary, and his 2017 salary would become his 2018 salary. Etc.

The cap space created by McClain's suspension this year will roll into next year, if it goes unused. So in a way, from a STRICT salary cap perspective, the Cowboys might be onto something by employing players prone to suspension. The plus side is it offers salary cap relief. I would never want to build a team that way, bad character doesn't win, but you do get a break on the cap during a suspension.

I don't like Fletcher Cox. But I will like Fletcher Cox when he hits Romo. That dude doesn't just tackle QBs he slams them down like the Hulk flinging tanks.

Can't wait to see Romo's shit eating grin wiped away after that hit.

I do like Junior Galette though. A LOT.

For the Cowboys to do anything, Elliot has to be as good as advertised. Maybe he is. Maybe he isn't. Even if he is, their defense is filled with question marks.

The only thing that really sets them apart is that O-line. It's filled with talent. Throw in Dez and, yes, they have offensive talent but I just am not seeing them stopping a lot of people or really having the offensive depth to hurt you a lot of different ways.

Stack the line for Elliot. Double Dez. They'll score some points but it's not like there a reincarnation of The Greatest Show on Turf.

I love Cousins, think he's great, think he's the best thing for this team in a long time, but i still think about the possibility of him playing in another uniform in 2017. Probably everyone has thought about it. I want to have hope for the "new regime" but i still get afraid sometimes that we will "redskin" the situation with cousins

Cousins isn't going anywhere unless he completely tanks.

Or maybe if Vinnie comes back. We could always trade him for Peyton Manning! (Maybe throw in a first round pick with Cousins).

Oh n Schneed - Galette is the key. If he returns to form we will be damn good next year!

I agree, he is the single player most capable of transforming our team. Norman is clutch too, but if Galette comes through then our pass rush package looks way different. We've come to really love and appreciate Ryan Kerrigan, and he's great. But man Galette is a different deal. The quicks off the edge are astounding.

There's Von Miller and Khalil Mack, but after that, you don't go too many before you get to Junior. It's all about how well that achilles responds.

I like Preston Smith, he's going to beast this year. Also have high hopes for our 4th man in the rotation, either Lynden Trail or Willie Jefferson needs to step it up and make the team.

Re: Around the NFL: Offseason edition 2.0

We have the potential for a pretty scary pass rush in Galette, Smith, and Kerrigan. A couple of big, but attainable, ifs: IF Galette comes back full strength, IF Smith continues to grow and doesn't suffer a sophomore slump.

However, it's the Summer and I am in full Kool-Aid mode on these three. They have the potential to really terrorize an opposing QB.

If the OLB's can bring it the way we anticipate, then it will help the inside rush, as well. I think we all know that Big Swaggy is going to produce and I believe that we'll get some pressure from the rest of our DL rotation. I'm looking forward to seeing what Murphy can do as an inside pass rusher.
