Re: Lions postgame
First of all, I think the Jaguars and the Lions are much better teams than they were last year (and Washington may not be). Are we lucky to be 1-1 - probably. Could we be 2-0 - yep. That said, I'm not too mad about going 1-1 after playing the Jags at home and the Lions on the road. I still think this team can be at least 2-2 after four games, and that's where most thought they would be. I'm still giving the team/players/coaches until after week four before I decide what we really have going on this year.
So far, I think the offense is legit, but the defense is so frustrating. Collectively, they just are not getting it done consistently. Too many big plays, and the inability to stop the run is mind-boggling. Specific to the Detroit game though, I think it just boils down to who wanted it more after the clock started. I can't say it was the game plan, or really direct too much blame toward the coaches. The players got beat at every position group in the 1st half. To me, the Detroit players came to play from the jump, and the Commanders did not. I'll give them credit for making some adjustments and making it interesting in the 2nd half, but there's no excuse for what we saw in the 1st half. There's as much talent on this team as there is on Detroit's, but that doesn't matter if the effort is half-ass; or if you just expect to go in somewhere and get the W, but instead get slapped in the face. Ultimately yes, it's on the Coaches if the players aren't ready to go. But in reality the professional football players wearing burgundy and gold just didn't match the intensity of their opponent, dug themselves a hole, and were unable to recover. If it was a 90 minute game, they win 51-50...lol I hope this one leaves a really bad taste for all of them. |

Re: Lions postgame
I sub to Mark Bullock's substack and he had an excellent post today breaking down a specific reason why our D struggled this week. WR bunch sets - we had a bunch of miscommunications throughout week 1 because St. Juste and co. weren't cleanly defining their responsibilities. They have options - everyone can go man to man or defenders can pass off a receiver to a specific area so they don't get jammed up in man to man. There were several plays last week where it was clear we weren't communicating well which led to receivers running free - Trevor Lawrence didn't exploit those opportunities though. Detroit picked up on it in film and tested it out this week and it was clear we hadn't fixed this week in practice so they exploited it all day. The A. St. Brown 49 yarder came from a bunches coverage exploit.
Anyways this is the long route of saying Ron doesn't think this is a big issue, or he does and he's not letting on. Either way they gotta get it fixed otherwise the Eagles will be exploiting it next week.

Washington starting center Chase Roullier is in danger of missing the rest of the season due to significance of knee injury, per source. Surgery considered a viable option but second opinion coming. As @john_keim noted, short-term IR at minimum.

I do think even JDR made a decent job at mixing up personnel and looks and making some adjustment. I do think it was a matter of intensity and will to win, and while I agree players have their personal responsibility in that, when it's the whole team it does point to bad coaching IMO. Ron isn't getting em fired up.

Re: Lions postgame
Agreed. But they do need a DC to come up with some workable defensive scheme. And I think we all seem to largely agree that we do not not have that.

Re: Lions postgame
Ron the GM should tell Ron the coaching winning a SB helps with that plan.
