Redskin's Notes at the end of 3/13

Redskins Notes: The Redskins have begun converting about $13.5 million in total roster bonuses due to players in 2006 into signing bonuses, which will clear about $10 million in total cap space. Linebacker Marcus Washington, for instance, agreed to convert $3.4 million in roster bonuses and base salary into a signing bonus, which is then prorated to save the team $2.5 million in cap space this year, according to a source with knowledge of the situation. . . . Gibbs conceded the team needs help at linebacker after the departure of LaVar Arrington, but the best of a thin free agent class has already signed elsewhere with little interest from Washington. The Redskins did make an overture to linebacker Akin Ayodele, according to a source with knowledge of the situation, but he signed with Dallas yesterday.. . . Gibbs said Williams contacted free agent safety Ryan Clark, a starter in 2005, yesterday and did not rule out re-signing him. . . . The Redskins re-signed free agent linebacker Khary Campbell.

so 4.4 from lavar, 7.5mill in re-prorated signing bonus money, 10mill in other bonus -> SB money and the ability to convert base salary (on jansen, brunell, and thomas - for up to 6.8mill in savings this year)

so my totally confusing number of up to 29million in savings turned out to be true... which is a shocking number beyond words.

they did try for akin (at least 3-4 of us called it), which was a good idea, but his heart was in dallas. the LB crop looks bad now and maybe they've shifted to CB/OL and using the #2 pick on an LB now, instead of drafting OL. some decent CBs and OL guys may fall into the 5th, but unless we get a high pick for ramsey, i doubt we'll be able to get them.

some possible targets:
OL -> R wells (cards RFA starting LG, 6th rounder), J mitchell (panthers starting C, can play OG)
CB -> dyson, plummer (closer to #2s than #3s though, but dyson may be cheap enough)

LB draftees:
ILB: D'Qwell Jackson (1-2), Kai Parham (4-5)
OLB: Thomas Howard (2), Jon Alston (2), Brandon Johnson (5)

dqwell jackson would be a great pick, but id rather use the 2nd rounder on a CB

market forces have conspired though, and good FA corners are FAR more plentiful right now than good FA LBs. we'll see what happens though, but i think CB is the 3rd draft option right now. I'd rather get OL myself.

also that may be why they are thought to be considering getting Abraham to put Carter at LB

if so it'd be a really bad idea. both are good DEs, carter is too slow to be worthwhile at LB and a 30mill contract for his mediocre LB play is an outrageous watse of money when peterson wouldn't cost much more (and he'd be much cheaper than JA without costing picks).

I really can't believe we're still in the Abe hunt. But given what Williams and Lindsey have been able to do without Lavar over the last 2 years, I have confidence that we'll be fine at LB.

Impressive stuff with the cap. Schaffer has earned his money big time! (Hope he negotiated some incentives into his own deal )

I think we might see a platoon at LB of Clemons and someone like Holdman, if we re-sign him of course.

I was watching "around the horn" last night. Jay Mariotti gave us the usual "Yankee's' comparison. Woody Page and the other guys basically were of the opinion that, the Skins are the new NFC King (for what it's worth). Woody discussed specifics of the personel moves and had much praise for Joe and staff....................interesting

Couldn't agree more! Many media types, however, tend to view us less positively. It was refreshing

2 contracts (arch and El) are currently overvalued. they could outplay them, but besides the money, the quality of the players is pretty good.
