Blitz or Coverage?
Gregg Williams has always been known to bring all kinds of pressure and blitzes and he can mask them well. I am wondering though it seems that the secondary has been struggling esp. when they blitz and leave 1 on 1 matchups. If they cut back on blitzing and just rushed the front 4 and kept an extra defensive back in it seems it would help the secondary a lot. You can also use this guy to bring an occasional blitz. Also, when they are blitzing they aren't getting there quick enough so the QB can get the ball away before he has to run. Maybe it's time to switch away from blitzing a little bit and focus on coverage esp. since we got some good receivers coming up later this season.

Re: Blitz or Coverage?
gotta blitz. the defense did a lot better today because u saw williams open the defense up some more. with springs back, williams felt we could do more man to man, and u saw the blitzes coming a lot more often, and our defense was more effective. there is still some growing to do, but springs back definitely helped, and troy vincent is about 100 times better than archie in coverage, that was a big addition

Re: Blitz or Coverage?
I thought they mixed it up pretty well today. Romo did make some plays and they were fortunate to get some breaks like the T.O. drops, but they did get some pressure and they held Dallas to 19. I think that if they stay healthy, they can continue to be aggressive. They need to be at least a little agressive because of the weakness of their secondary. Greg Williams system is a pressure system. If the quarterback can stand back there unbothered then he will inevitably make plays.
It will be interesting to see how much he blitzes McNabb because Donovan is a guy and they are a team, the Eagles, who are well equipped to beat pressure. He is mobile and they run a lot of screens. So, if they were ever going to take a cautious appraoch, we may see it next week.

Re: Blitz or Coverage?
With our starting corners back in place expect GW to continue to crank up the heat.
He lives and dies with the blitz, and now that he can play more man coverage he's going to really dial up the pressure. |

Re: Blitz or Coverage?
blitz. weak coverage is exposed even more by not putting pressure on the qb. any average qb can find an open wr if he is giving 3 or 4 seconds. any time romo had decent time he tore us up. gotta pressure the qb and make him go one place.

Re: Blitz or Coverage?
Blitz, Blitz, Blitz, I would rather see our D give up a big run or pass here and there than an average QB look like a Pro-Bowler against our D...

Re: Blitz or Coverage?
Blitz! We need to do what we do best! The secondary is finally healthy. That's HUGE! Now they can develope the continuity neccessary to play lights out, swarm to the ball, Blitz 'em til they can't see straight, GREGG WILLIAMS DEFENSE! BLITZ ALL FUCKIN' DAY!

Re: Blitz or Coverage?
I think we need to be very cautious with our blitzes, mcnabb is one of the best at exploiting the blitz, with his quick release and pocket mobility. We need to sit back in coverage and hope donovan throws the game away like he did in Tampa. His pocket passing has gotten better, but I'd still rather keep him in the pocket than let him beat us on blitzes.

Re: Blitz or Coverage?
We were horrible when sitting back in coverage against Dallas.
Philly doesn't have the WRs that should scare our secondary as much though, so I'd expect GW to bring the heat just as much if not more. McNabb like most great QBs will pick you apart if given time. Gotta get in his face and make him rush his throws. |

Re: Blitz or Coverage?
A buddy of mine was suggesting that we were going to see Vincent alot more taking over AA's role. He implied that this would help us utilize AA a little better because we would bring him in on the plays he was brought to D.C. for... blitzing.

Re: Blitz or Coverage?
Even though it might make it a little obvious what we were doing if he comes in only for blitzing.

Re: Blitz or Coverage?
Yeah, but now we can fake-blitz...and...he's...back in for coverage...which...is...where...we...don't...want. ..him.
It's official, AA is useless!

At the very least, bring him when the blitz is obvious... Those long third downs...that we're so awesome at stopping.

Re: Blitz or Coverage?
i say lets try to get manabb to run. it seems like every time he runs, he comes back to the huddle and looks like he is gassed. either that or he throws up. lets make old fatso move
