Who else is interested and can afford Smoot?
Okay, what teams out there are still looking for a CB and what are their cap situations?
I am pretty sure KC is still looking and ESPN's rumour central has the Jets interested in Smoot. Otherwise: Baltimore - signed Rolle Dallas - signed Henry Cleveland - signed Baxter Seattle - per ESPN, most likely to trade for Surtain As available CB's go, that leaves Ty Law (who doesn't seem to be generating much interest) and Ken Lucas besides Smooty. It seems to me that Smoot's options are closing down. Anyone think KC will top the Skin's offer to Smoot? If so, do we try and sign Lucas or Law for less? |

Lucas was signed by the Pathers....
Law was getting looks from the Jets. The Chiefs still need a CB and have the room. I wouldn;t be surprised if the Giants look at him either depending on their cap room. |

Re: Who else is interested and can afford Smoot?
I don't see the Giants going for Smoot. I don't think they have much in the cap space area, thanks to Pierce, McKenzie, and Feely. Also, they have the two Wills at CB so they seem set. KC is the team I fear. I hope they go for Ty Law, but they seem to have their sights set on either Smoot or Surtain at this point. I really think its time for the Redskins to up the ante to Smoot, before he goes off to visit KC. He may never return if he makes it out there.

Springs man... Springs would be the one covering the #1 receiver.

That will be a real kick in the pants if the Jets get Smoot because we can't afford him because we GAVE them Coles.

Malcolm - I'd rather have smoot on the faster #1s, but Springs on the bigger ones. One thing that really scares me about losing Smoot is he does his damnest to finish the season. Springs seen as one of the best cornerbacks physically coming out of college has been plagued by injury his whole career. I hope he's past it, but one year doesn't necessarily mean that!

Re: Who else is interested and can afford Smoot?
I don't think we will up the ante to Smoot because we've already made him a more than fair offer which he refused.Based on the interest he's generated around the league, I don't think he's going to receive many offers much better than the one he's already been made.
I honestly think the Redskins should take a look at the young players they already have at the position. If Walt Harris is sufficiently recovered from the knee injury he came with last season, I think he will be more than adaquate as the starter opposite Springs. Both Wilds, and Rufus Brown have up-side, and I think we should look in-house to upgrade the position and stop considering free-agents every time we think we have a need. We already have talent at the cornerback position if we just give them an opportunity to produce. We all witnessed GW work magic with with more than a couple unhearlded defensive players last year, and there's nothing to make me think he dosen't more in store for this season. I say let's give our own players a fair chance to contribute, and if Smoot decides to take his game elsewhere, so be it. I certainly am not of the opinion we should be begging this guy to stay because we will still have a great defense without him. He certainly was not the reason we had the best defense in the NFC, as a matter of fact I recall two games he was directly the cause of us loosing with pass-interference calls. On one ocasion I recall him removing a guy's helmet for which he was assessed a personal foul, the kind of things coach Gibbs shows disdain for. I really don't think we need to sulk over his protracted departure. If all the thing he was saying during the season, and at the end of last season about wanting to be a part of that core group which Gibbs has spoken so often about are true, then "Sign The Contract" It's more than a fair offer. Hail Skins!! |

Daseal, do you think Plax is bigger or faster?? I always thought he was bigger rather than fast. I agree with that though, I'd rather have Smoot on the faster ones too.

Re: Who else is interested and can afford Smoot?
na, springs is better and should cover who ever is gonna get the ball the most. smoot isnt as fast as springs. and at 200lbs (springs) and at 175lbs (smoot) i like spings body vs smoot to jam at the line especially in 1on1 situations. be smart fellas

Re: Who else is interested and can afford Smoot?
Typically though, whoever is fastest is also the smallest (and it seems most often to be the #2 receiver) so it kind of happens out of necessity anyway.

Re: Who else is interested and can afford Smoot?
I will be very surprised if KC does not go hard after Smoot in the next couple days. They need a corner badly and would have signed Rolle if his medical report didn't scare them off.
The Skins will never get Smoot back without sweetening the offer and this clusterf*ck Coles situation has taken away the skins ability to increase thier offer. |

Re: Who else is interested and can afford Smoot?
To tell ya the truth right now I'd be fine going into the season with the guys we got now and the rookies we get in the draft, even if Smoot leaves, Wilds has my vote he got thrown in against Randy Moss and held his one I'm game to go in as we are baby!

Re: Who else is interested and can afford Smoot?
this doesn't really have anything to do with the original premise of this thread but anyone else noticing how much more the league has become friendly towards big stars switching teams through trades? coles 4 moss, last year portis 4 bailey, orlando pace possibly being traded, the TO "trade" last year, and that surtain deal with seattle and miami might hint at him and a pick going towards Seattle for Alexander.
as far as smoot, I see him either in a jets or chiefs uni next year. |
