who said anything about passing? there are other running plays other than the Counter-Trey. what happened to plays that take better advantage of Portis, or maybe a play Parcells doesn't know by heart and made absolutely sure the Cowboys knew how to sniff and snuff out? even more out of place, i think Gibbs may have actually tried to get 'cute' there.

Re: Will Gibbs Open Up the Offense Now?

The Cowboys were stuffing every sort of run...

Do we have to keep nitpicking, we did win the game, right?

i'd be down if you changed em all to GO TEAM for a week.
hopefully after the bye though, we could get back "Redskins Discussion For The Knowledeable Fan"

I know, they should have put PR in the backfield for a dive play off right guard. He probably would have run someone over.

Re: Will Gibbs Open Up the Offense Now?

thought we weren't supposed to bring up "the R-name" either. these rules are confusing.

i dunno, would Broughton have been too much to expect?

Re: Will Gibbs Open Up the Offense Now?

I think we're missing something a key point here, Gibbs doesn't call the plays. He can override the call, but who's to say the counter wasn't called down from Burns?

Re: Will Gibbs Open Up the Offense Now?

only second game in Gibbs's career that Burns is supposed to call in the plays. who know what really goes on, especially that late in that game. should we edit the thread name to "Will Gibbs/Burns Open Up the Offense Now?"

Re: Will Gibbs Open Up the Offense Now?

you know guys, for as sad as our offense has looked...I have been reading a bunch of Skins articles this morning and statistically we are doing pretty well. Moss already has three plays of 39 yds or more, two of which are over 50 yds. We only did that five times all year last year. We havent been very consistent but we are atleast taking steps in the right direction with the play calling and execution.

Re: Will Gibbs Open Up the Offense Now?

While we are on the topic of conservative playcalling. The play I HATE the most and the one that should be ripped out of every playbook, is the WR Screen! Spurrier ran it and Gibbs runs it now as well. Has anyone ever seen that play get more than 3 yards? It has got to be the uglyest looking play ever conceived. I think it works in High school and college, because CBs are slow to react and especially if they are giving a WR 7-10 yards off the line. But I have never seen it work in the NFL. I guess the concept is to make the first CB miss, but it never works out that way.

I agree, we run it all the time too. Against the bears we ran it twice in a row...It didtn work for Spurrier, it hasnt worked for Gibbs last year or this year...throw that play away.

Re: Will Gibbs Open Up the Offense Now?

ugh, the WR screen. it worked for double digit yards a couple times last year with Coles, but he was better suited to it (apparently he must've hated them too). can't stand that play, just keeps the box filled up and too dangerous for a pick into a TD. but that could be considered nitpicking.

Re: Will Gibbs Open Up the Offense Now?

If it's executed properly a WR screen can be effective against an aggressive D, much like a draw play.

Re: Will Gibbs Open Up the Offense Now?

You dont run a screen when there is 8 people up from and the safties creeping in. Thats when you throw it deep or a quick slant before the rush gets there. Then once they play back you can run it, but they dont ever play us back.

That's like saying you don't run a draw when there's a run blitz coming... that's exactly when you run it and again if you can execute it properly you can pop off a big gain and make a D think twice about being so aggressive.

If there's a heavy blitz coming you're probably not going to have time to go deep. That's where you need a quick hitting play.

I'm not a huge fan of the WR screen but it serves it's purpose if properly executed, which we seem to have a problem with for some reason. I'd actually like to see more RB screens.

Re: Will Gibbs Open Up the Offense Now?

run-blitzes make their way to the QB by filling in the running lanes, and pretty much takes away the RB draw up the middle. slants and dump offs in the vacuum of the blitzer is how you get past them. the draw is good for outside blitzes and delayed tosses are good when it's the entire house coming.
