Re: Jordan Reed Gets Contract Exetension
Don't mind the contract if he can stay healthy. He's definitely a talent.

Re: Jordan Reed Gets Contract Exetension
Awesome, I feel much better about getting this done now than next year.
Less distraction for the guy, and less dicking around we have to do later. Our next season is shaping up nicely.

Re: Jordan Reed Gets Contract Exetension
For the Bruce Allen haters, Jordan Reed is a BA guy.

Re: Jordan Reed Gets Contract Exetension
Great point, credit where it's due. Allen pulled the trigger on that pick, but it was a draft board developed by the same scouting staff that McCloughan currently employs.
What's interesting to think about is whether McCloughan's culture that he brought in last year (tough, passionate players who play with high effort) rubbed off on Reed. He really exploded last year. Was that a function of being healthy last year? Certainly. Was it also a function of working hard last year? Definitely. How much does the team's culture influence how hard a player works? Great question to think about, impossible to answer. But I can tell you it doesn't hurt! Everyone deserves credit on Reed. Allen and staff picked him. McCloughan set a vision for a culture and implemented it. Gruden and McVay found ways to put him in position to succeed. Cousins knew how to get him the ball. And Reed himself busted his tail. I just feel like the team's culture and character of the locker room has an unquantifiable impact on the work ethic and performance of all 53. It's the biggest reason that I feel like we genuinely can hope to contend for championships before 2020.

Re: Jordan Reed Gets Contract Exetension
Gotta give Jay G a ton of cred...he loves the TE position and made him the red zone focal point. Schemed him off the line putting him in winning situations

Another BA point is a lot of these contracts are his doing, I don't think Scott M is a great money guy. BA and SM make a great one two punch for our front office. Just wanted to give BA some love.

Reed grew up last year. Nice that we're rewarding our own.

Re: Jordan Reed Gets Contract Exetension
Obviously he is one of the best when he's healthy. Good job to lock him up. This FO knows what they're doing. I just prey that he doesn't get another concussion or two.

Re: Jordan Reed Gets Contract Exetension
Yeah and on concussions. Do you guys think there are some players that are just prone to getting them more easily than others? Or do you think that Reed having a few in his early years was more just a function of bad luck, with the rule of small samples leading people to improperly conclude that he is injury prone?
Part of me figures that maybe some guys get a concussion more easily than others, and some of it may be just not knowing exactly how to protect yourself. But the other side of me says it's just bad luck - you either got hit in the head or you didn't. If it was constantly an issue of soft tissue injuries I'd definitely label him injury prone, but I'm not sure the concussions weren't just a couple rotten-luck events clustered together.

Did anyone see the concussion study being done? I'll probably botch some of the details (i included link at end), but the jist is they studied the woodpecker who bangs their head 80 million times in their lifetime with presumably minimal damage. They discovered the woodpecker's tongue muscle actually wrapped around their brain & reduced the vein pressure, keeping more blood in the head cavity...essentially eliminating air space between the brain & cranium, which reduces movement & force that the brain could be tossed around. So, based on that, they used a U shaped collar that slips over the back of a player's neck to reduce the blood flow from the jugular so that more blood stays in the head cavity, reducing air space. So, hopefully, there will be a medical breakthrough on that front some time soon. here's the link...... Device to protect brain from concussions inspired by birds - CBS News |

Re: Jordan Reed Gets Contract Exetension
As I noted in the Josh Norman thread, SM has taken the scattershot approach from previous years and morphed it into a single purpose build model - Build for consistent success with tough talented "football players" and championships will follow. To do so, focus on growing your own to grow the right culture so it passes from locker room to locker room.
As demonstrated by the extensions to Reed, Williams, and Kerrigan, soon enough, we won't need to sign older players who will "help create the right culture" (like we did last year with Knighton & Goldson and in previous years like Ryan Clark & others) b/c the young guys will have the right mindset and the "right culture" will already exist. As GM, BA (with Shanahan admittedly) found some talented, tough "football players": Reed, T. Williams, Kerrigan, Morris, Paul, Breeland (and possibly Moses, Long, Murphy). The problem was they weren't necessarily aiming for the mindset or building around it. They just got talented guys who happened to have that mindset. Scotty McC has a coherent vision for the long term viability of this team as a winner. Conversely, as coach, Gruden should be solely focused on winning next year (not for job-security reasons, but because, as coach, that's where his focus should be).
