Available Cap Room
Prior to this week, the Redskins had consumed about $115 million of cap space. Then, the Redskins cut Arrington and saved almost $4.4 million in cap space, bringing our cap figure to about $110.5 million. Various media outlets are reporting that the cap is expected to be set at roughly $102 million. Thus, we need to trim about $8.5 million to get under the cap.
The Washington Post is reporting, as we all guessed, that Walt Harris, Brandon Noble, Matt Bowen, and Cory Raymer are definate cap casualties. Those cuts trim our cap by close to $6.7 million. Patrick Ramsey is going to be traded or released, bringing an addition $1.7 million in cap space. Between those cuts/trades, we will be just about at the cap limit. We might expect to cut a few more guys (e.g. Hall, Tupa, Thrash). I would guess that we'll save a few million ($2-4) more there. The Washington Post is also reporting that, with the new CBA, the Redskins also now have the option of converting about $13.5 million of total roster bonuses due to eight players into signing bonuses for cap purposes, which would create another $10 million in 2006 savings. A few other routine contract restructurings with high-salaried players like quarterback Mark Brunell and tackle Jon Jansen would create more space (possibly $2-4 million). So, right now, I would guess that we will have somewhere between $10-$18 million in cap room. That's a lot of dough. Canuck, That Guy, and other aspiring capologists, let me know what you guys think about this. |

Re: Available Cap Room
Also we can prorate bonuses longer now than when the 117(not 115) was calculated. I think the Post article alluded to this seriously diminshing our cap number.

Re: Available Cap Room
Sounds like a good estimate to me RF but I'm not one of those aspiring capologists you refer to.

Re: Available Cap Room
I did a quick and dirty excel on the longer prorating of bonuses and came up with between 9 and 13 million saved depending on whether we can prorate over 5 or 6 years now. That is HUGE.

I think $10 million in room for renegotiations is reasonable, so after that figure we're at about $92.1 million. Then we appear to be close to getting Rock signed, we tendered Dockery, tendered Chris Clemons, and we still want to bring back Ryan Clark and Demetric Evans. I'd figure on about $3-4 million (off the top of my head estimate) for those guys. Leaving us $6 million at bare minimum to sign rookies (rookies won't cost much, we don't have a 1st rounder) and go get some free agents. We could have even more room than $6 million to work with, depending on what we do with base salary restructures. In summary, after we resign our own FAs, I think the low estimate is $6 million, the high estimate is $10 million in the cap room we'll have to play with this year.
