Four Key Players In the NFC East

Everyone knows that Clinton Portis, Donovan McNabb, Terrell Owens and Michael Strahan are among the top NFC East players. But for their respective teams to succeed, they will need help. Here's another quartet of players who will have a great deal to say about who wins the division in 2006.

Redskins: Randy Thomas
It's not often that an offensive guard is one of the leaders of an NFL team. But in the case of the Redskins and right guard Randy Thomas, the mold is broken.

Thomas may have been on his way to a Pro Bowl season in 2005 until he suffered a leg injury versus the Cowboys on Week 15. He and Jon Jansen had been a strong tandem on the right side of the Redskins' line up to that point.

The former New York Jet is expecting to return to form in 2006. That means the 6-5, 306-pound Thomas will be willing to do everything he can to get his teammates fired up to play each week. His emotion is always evident for the Redskins in their pre-game preparations.

Prior to going down on Week 15 last year, Thomas, the eighth-year right guard, had missed only four games in his NFL career. He joined the Redskins during the team's whirlwind free agent signing weekend back in 2003.

In the 17-10 win over the Eagles on Nov. 6 last year, Clinton Portis and Mike Sellers ran behind Thomas on their short carries into the end zone.

On Portis's six-yard run, Thomas took care of linebacker Jeremiah Trotter. That game versus Philly may rank as Thomas's best in a Redskins uniform.

The Mississippi State product has truly thrived in the blocking schemes of assistant head coach-offense Joe Bugel.

Eagles: Brian Westbrook
In Philly, Brian Westbrook is a Pro Bowler who seems on the verge of joining the NFL's upper echelon of backs. Westbrook is one of the league's most versatile players, something on the order of new Redskin wide receiver and return specialist Antwaan Randle El.

But can Westbrook stay healthy and handle a full workload at the same time? He hasn't played a full season in his career.

The return of Donovan McNabb and the departure of Terrell Owens are the significant stories for Andy Reid and company. An equally important story line for 2006 concerns Westbrook, the former Villanova star, and how he fares in his fourth season as a constant threat in the Philly offensive scheme.

Cowboys: Mike Vanderjagt
Dallas brought in the temperamental T.O., to beef up its passing game but Owens is just one of the potential risks for Bill Parcells.

Place-kicker Mike Vanderjagt is one of the game's most talented players at his position but he's also a player who can rub teammates the wrong way.

Vanderjagt once again gets to kick indoors most of the time but he'll have to prove that he can rebound from that crucial miss versus the Steelers in last year's AFC title game in Indianapolis.

According to some media reports, Vanderjagt doesn't like the idea of kicking off, saying: "Kickoffs are a no-win situation. It's a thankless job."

Giants: Antonio Pierce
In the NFC Wild Card game versus Carolina, New York linebackers were one of the team's weak links. Injuries were the culprit.

In his first season in New York, ex-Redskin Antonio Pierce was on top of his game and had the Giants' defense playing solid ball. As the season wore on, Pierce went down with injury and the Giants really slipped on the defensive side.

Can Pierce return to form, and how will the Giants' linebackers mesh, with so many new faces? Pierce, Brandon Short and Carlos Emmons are back. Also in the mix, of course, is LaVar Arrington, who teamed with Short at Penn State and Pierce in Washington.

New York head coach Tom Coughlin told reporters: "I think we've fortified the position."

Is the NFC East becoming the Big 10 of the NFL?
If any of you follow Big Ten football, you know this gripe well: "This conference beats the hell out of each other for 3 1/2 months and can never put a team in the National Championship". I believe this complaint to be true. Every year there are 3 or 4 teams vying for the conference title, the champs are usually decided on the last day of the season, and one team almost never comes out with a perfect record. Is this happening to the NFC East?

IMO, there has never been this much talent amassed in this division. Im having a hard time trying to think of another division in the last 10 years that was as stacked as the NFC East. It is without a doubt the toughest division in the NFL. Its great and should make for some excited rivalry games, but will it come back to haunt us? Seeing the 'Skins, Cowboys, Giants, or Eagles a combined 6 times is a bit more daunting than Seattles or Chicagos divisonal schedules, and our records will reflect that.

I'm begining to think I would not be surprised to see whoever wins this division limp into the playoffs at a banged up, injured 10-6, which would be a shame. Just a thought that crossed my mind.
