Brunell Lost a step?

I know its early in the season and there is rust, but WTF is wrong with Brunell? He couldnt even complete a 7yd dump off pass, he threw it into the turf a couple of times. There were two overthrown balls to llyod, luckily he pulled one in. And that horrible interception where he threw across his body, but didnt have enough arm to get it out of bounds. Im just a lil worried cause our season really hinges on his play, its pretty obvious we dont have any talent in Collins and Campbell is not ready to be a starter yet.

Re: Brunell Lost a step?

Brunnell looked fine to me, except the INT. But even on that, he was making the right read and throwing it away--just didn't throw it far enough. Remember--it's all about rythm at QB and he didn't get much play. ANd the playbook was most definetly NOT open. Now Collins, on the other hand...

Re: Brunell Lost a step?

Oh boy here we go.

A couple of those throws were intentionally thrown away. That's how you throw the ball away inside the tackle box, rather than throwing it to a defensive lineman like Collins did.

The INT seemed to be a miscommunication and a busted play.

It's still way too early to get up in arms over the QB situation. They're still learning the offense and working on getting on the same page. For the first preseason game, things went pretty much as expected if you ask me. Yeah we could have done without the INT, but he did hit Moss and Lloyd with a couple of nice throws, and actually overthrew Lloyd on a deep ball (so much for the bum arm take).

Re: Brunell Lost a step?

I'll admit I wasn't exactly pleased with Brunell last night, but it was the first preseason game so I'm going to hold off judging him for now.
Like JWsleep said, he needs to get his timing back.
To quote Lavar (couldn't go a day without bringing him up) Brunell just needs to "get his mental-reps down."

Actually I heard that Brunell admitted on the radio that he was trying to throw it away. Just didn't go far enough.

Add in the fact he was throwing across his body while trying to turn and avoid a hit and I'm not going to hold it against him too much.

It's the preseason, who cares.

Yup. And Portis will be back by opening day and all will be right in the world.

Re: Brunell Lost a step?

Guys, lets not forget this is a new offense. And I think the big thing with Brunnell is he's in there to not lose us a game. As good as our defense and running game is, we don't need Joe Montana. Look what the Ravens did a few years back with that defense and Trent Dilfer at the helm. I feel our D could be just as dominating this year. My only concern is Brunnell's play in the playoffs last season. If that continues into this year, we may be in trouble.

Only if Collins is still the #2 when that happens. And it's going to happen.

Re: Brunell Lost a step?

I think the 1st team offense moved the ball with relative ease until the interception. Let's give it a week or two before we start judgin anyone. In fact, two weeks when the starters probably play a half of football vs. the Patriots will be a good time to judge the starting O.

It's all good so long as CP is back on 9/11/06.

Re: Brunell Lost a step?

he looked okay. The interception was ugly. The good news is Brunnell does not have to be a superstart for us to win, he just needs to make a few plays and when the time is right he will make them. We had the same conversations last year, Brunnell does not have the arm strength, he is to old, does not have his legs, etc. He will be okay as long as he stays healthy.

Re: Brunell Lost a step?

I don't think he looked bad. He got us down the field in a nice drive (yes I know he had a pick) the rest will come as long as we can move the ball.

If we still have issues the next two games I will start to worry.

However folks, remember, Gibbs best seasons had some of the worst pre-seasons. I hope that remains the same.

Re: Brunell Lost a step?

brunells reads were ok. his execution on the interception was lousy. his job this year is to manage the game with no turnovers and let that nasty a** defense we have win us a championship

Unhappy Re: Brunell Lost a step?

Brunell is a washed-up, has-been. He looked terrible down the stretch last year and showed that same lack of arm strength last night.
We're going to be in for a long year if Portis doesn't get (stay) healthy because Brunell is not going to win us any games.
In his prime, MB was a pretty damn good QB. But he is maybe 50% of what he once was. Preseason or not, that interception last night was indicative of the kind of passes he made all 2004-5 season and down the stretch last year. Even his 4 completions had no zip on the ball. Arm strength, unfortunately, does not increase as the season goes on.
