Strangely, I agree with skinsfan69 and FRPLG (and paintrain). You should draft the best player available. However, if you don't need the player (as we don't need a WR right now), then you shouldn't pick him - you should trade the pick.

I can't imagine anyone passing on Calvin Johnson, that man will be insane in the pros. Except the Cardinals I guess...

Re: Calvin Johnson entering NFL draft
Still, the team that takes him probably could have taken a player much more conducive to a teams success...and thats assuming that Johnson is everything we expect him to be at the NFL level. It possibly could be far, far worse.

Re: Calvin Johnson entering NFL draft
I truly doubt he'll be available at #6. I bet he goes in the top 3. A guy like him only comes along every 10 years or so.

If he's available that means teams might be desparate enough to offer us something good for him. Maybe a middle 1st & early 2nd or middle 1st and next years 1st? If he's available.

Re: Calvin Johnson entering NFL draft
How can you say we don't need him? Outside of Santana who in the hell do we have at WR that's worth a damn? And please don't say crybaby LLoyd or ARE. Both are number 3 WR's. Who goes over the middle besides Cooley? Who can we throw a jump ball too?

Re: Calvin Johnson entering NFL draft
Who do we have now that's going to keep the opposing team's score below 20 so that we can win with the talent we have? Sure, if we got CJ we might still only put up 20+ points a game, but we're still lacking in the defense department and teams don't win Super Bowls by simply being able to out-gun the other team. How about them Colts?

But I agree with you 100% about our defense. But it comes down to who's the best player. If CJ becomes a great player and let's say Adams or the guy on Mich. becomes a solid starters than who gets the better of the deal? Someone brough up a great point in another thread. The last time we drafted for need we got Carlos Rogers because of Smoot. As it turns out there were MUCH better players on the board. D. Ware and Merriman. |

Re: Calvin Johnson entering NFL draft
If he's still available after the Raiders pick, I'll be surprised. I don't see a Raider's future with Moss or Porter in the mix. They need someone or sometwo. CJ would be a pretty good fit for them, not sure about the other way around. Poor Calvin, we hardly knew ye.

I agree. He'll be long gone by the time we pick.

Davis is looking to make a big splash and get the frachise turned around before his chat with St. Pete. Brady Quinn is all but wearing a Silver and Black jersey in my opinion. Oakland hasn't had a respectible QB since Gannon folded in '02 and Davis recognizes that next to a legit head coach, the most important acquisition he can make is at QB. Now I'm not saying the Raider's SHOULD pick Quinn, as I happen to believe he is vastly overrated, but QB is the bigger need than WR plus Davis likes marquee names with draft picks. |

Can Calvin Johnson play cornerback? If not, forget about it.

The Raiders are going to pass on CJ and Quinn for Russell and continue being completely horrible.

Re: Calvin Johnson entering NFL draft
I agree. If they wouldn't take Leinart why would they take Quinn? Russell seems like a guy they'd die for. I don't get that warm fuzzy feeling from Russell. I think he looks like a bust to me. Actually not really a bust but more of a Campbell type (Ie: solid guy who could turn out good, most likely will be decent, but could be a total disaster). And we got skewered for trading up and taking him. I don't get the love for Russell.
