I was also checking out some reviews and cnet seems to give avast 5 stars vs. 4 for AVG...

I'm not sure why, though...

Probably for the built-in spyware.

you can get ad-aware at Ad-Aware @ Lavasoft - The Original Anti-Spyware Company - Lavasoft

or spybot search and detroy. there's a few things that work pretty well for that.
