I'm surprised it took as long as it did for this thread to show up...

No way. He is too old. We don't need someone who has the age issue and could have injury issues down the road hindering our LB corps. Besides blades and campbell or any other rookie that they could get off the street would be better from the stand point of longevity. I don't think that Derrick Smith would be the right fit for us.

Derek Smith is reunited with Norvell........nice move norv? THE END.

FOX Sports on MSN - NFL - Bolts agree to deal with linebacker Smith

POSTED 4:42 p.m. EST, February 24, 2008

SMITH LANDS IN SAN DIEGO

Well, we'll have to take Derek Smith out of the official PFT dumpster.

The veteran linebacker signed a contract on Sunday with the Chargers, less than a week after being cut by the 49ers.

Smith had spent seven seasons in San Fran. As a reader pointed out to us, he originally was drafted by the Redskins in 1997, at a time when Chargers coach Norv Turner was the head coach in D.C.

there is no such thing as a stupid question just stupid people with questions that are never asked...

I would not be interested in Smith but he would be a better pick-up than some smart ass wanna be bad ass who turned out to be a dud!...I mean Lavar.

I got carried away!

OMG I'm so glad I was able to break this news. Chargers sign linebacker Smith to two-year deal

YES I AM THE FASTEST NEWS BREAKER THIS WORLD HAS TO OFFER! I POST LINKS BEFORE THE SITES EVEN PUTS THEM UP

By the way, whats with all the Derick Smith hate? He was a pretty decent player while he was here and he started for the 49ers for seven years, including the years where they were going to the playoffs. Next time do a background check before saying stupid stuff like "he sucked!"

Don't believe me, then see what ESPN had to say about the guy:
ESPN - With emergence of Willis, 49ers release longtime leading tackler Smith - NFL
"Smith has long been one of the NFL's top unsung defensive players, annually racking up gaudy tackling statistics with little fanfare.

And whats with all these injury issues? The guy has missed 9 games in 10 seasons. Maybe his bodies breaking down but hes not a guy I would consider injury prone.

He is a Charger, and I actually did not see any reason for us to pursue him anyway.

Re: Is former 'skin Derek Smith worth signing?

Maybe he can carry the watter bottle or something but other than that hell no, I'd rather sign a undrafted free agent who is young and has potential to be great or at least decent. That guy will just get older and suckier.
