JLC Draft Speculation
Draft Ramblings - Redskins Insider
Much of the pre-draft hype surrounding the Redskins - all the mockety mocks and that stuff - has focused on the Skins taking a WR or DE with the 21st pick. But after speaking with people involved in Washington's process - which is still in a relatively nascent stage - the sense is growing that taking a O Lineman at 21 is a strong possibility. Sources suggested a trade for a solid veteran corner in the next few weeks is possible. Philly's Lito Sheppard is the most prominent name being shopped, but as we went over last month, the Skins rebuffed Philly's advances, concerned about his health and not wanting to deal a high pick. But the Skins could very well package one of their third rounders, and maybe something else, to get a dependable corner, and then, on draft day, trade out of the 21st pick and essentially re-acquire the draft pick assets they dealt for the corner. Comprende? I've felt all along the Skins will make a trade of some kind to address either WR or CB, and perhaps it will play out sooner rather than later. |

Re: JLC Draft Speculation
I was close to posting this too as just read it on wash post.
Sounds good to me, the one thing that I can see as a problem (in addition to trading too many picks) is Buges v. Blache. Hope there isn't too much tension there over how that first pick is used. I would love to see us land Albert, just as many here would. I was pleasantly surprised that Duane Brown (JLC calls him D. Thomas) of VT is mentioned as a potential OL pick. He's a great athlete, probably a solid middle 2nd round guy at best. We all know we need OL help plus WR, DT,DE & Cb. But I will be a bit surprised if we pick one that high. |

Re: JLC Draft Speculation
Who else besides Lito Sheppard fits the definition of a "solid veteran corner" that is currently available?

Re: JLC Draft Speculation
I keep hearing there's a fairly well regarded veteran DB that will be a June 1st cut, but I can't figure out who it is. It's not Springs.

Re: JLC Draft Speculation
The only guys I could think of as possibilities are Patrick Surtain of the Chiefs and Deltha O'Neal of the Bengals, not sure about the "well regarded" part on these two though. Both are over 30.

Re: JLC Draft Speculation
You'd think I'd be happier, but honestly I don't think that there's any offensive lineman at 21 that I would take with the 21st pick, especially considering the fact that Branden Albert will probably be gone. Lets see, the only lineman that I can think of being worth the pick at 21 might be Gosder Cherilus, but I personally think we can get better value in rounds 2 or 3.
Gosder Cherilus Scouting Report - 2008 NFL Draft Prospect I wonder what they mean when they label him as versitle. If it means that he can play Guard for the time being then awesome, but if he can only play Tackle then I'm not so sure. I kind of like him though, he has a nice combination of feet and hand use, not to mention power. And according to Mark Schlearth, as well as all the coaches I met when I was in high school, the key to being a good lineman is not only power, but good use of hands and feet, not to mention being able to get off the ball. Duane Brown of Virginia Tech seems to be another name but that would probably be a guy they would select if they trade down into the second round. I'd also expect them to select Lawrence Jackson if they traded back into the second and maybe pounce on Jordy with an early third round pick. God this draft just got a lot more complicated. And the funny thing is you'd think with all the info coming out of Redskin park it would be easy to guess who the Skins were going to pick. Looks like Zorn was right when he said theres a lot guys that they're looking at right now.

Re: JLC Draft Speculation
Offensive lineman. Brandon Alberts would be a steal at 21. He won't be there, but he's worth trading up for and we need a young starting guard that we can afford for six years or so as badly as we need anything. Time to start building around Jason Campbell. Clinton deserves a great athletic right guard, too. Eh?

Re: JLC Draft Speculation
This is the best article JLC has written in a while. Of course he had to go right back to writing for RV (Redskins Vendetta) one post later. Personally it's getting a little annoying. I mean we all know the Redskins have been idiots at times over the past few years, but all we can do for now is hope, and the FO has done a pretty good job finding good players in the draft. However with all this talk about getting a DT is a little troublesome as I don't know if Balmer's worth 21 and Laws I keep on going back and fourth, of course Laws becomes a possibility if we trade back. However between Laws and Balmer, I would rather have Laws.
Of course Merling's dropping stock, combined with his ability to move inside could be attractive to the front office, since drafting him would take care of two birds with one stones. Also does anyone know the football complications of a sports hernia?

Re: JLC Draft Speculation
I was watching the Skins @ Giants game of this past year and saw them using Lorenzo Alexander as a pulling guard on running plays. If that doesn't scream need for offensive lineman I don't know what does.
I would love to see 2 OL selections in the first 3 picks. Looks like the Skins are on the right track to building a foundation under the offense.

On second thought Sims might not be so bad if the coaching staff can work with him. Also, I found my answer on Gosder Cherilus. NFL Events: Combine Player Profiles - Gosder Cherilus Compares To: CORNELL GREEN-Oakland...Cherilus is a classic mauler who excels on down and drive blocks as a run blocker, but he proved in 2007 that he lacks the lateral agility and kick-slide to handle speed moves on the outside and will be a better fit at right tackle or inside at guard. He is not fluid enough to maintain position and mirror from left tackle. He has incredibly long reach and large hands and hits with good pop, but he is inconsistent shooting those hands and needs to be more active or it will negate one of his better assets. Struggled quite a bit with the snap count as a senior, resulting in a slew of penalties. If judged on what he did at right tackle in 2006, he will be an early-round pick. To me thats awesome. He can play inside at Guard until Jansen retires in which case he can move to LT. If this scouting report is true though then I have to say he reminds me of the Eagles Shaun Andrews.

Re: JLC Draft Speculation
Is Albert supposed to be gone at 21? I had anticipated him going to Pittsburgh at 23 as the most likely scenario, although I guess he could go as early as 12 to Denver. Still, even if he is gone it's likely that Williams or Otah will still be there, and Williams is someone I am particularily high on. I think if Merling or Harvey are still available they would be a good value at that pick, but there is too big a drop-off between those guys and someone like Calais Campbell, who doesn't appear to be first round talent.

It means they haven't got anything better, or more descript, to say about him.

Re: JLC Draft Speculation
Yeah baby, this article is music to my ears. I've been hoping for some young talent along the o-line, and if B. Albert falls to us I'll be ecstatic. If he's gone I heard Chilo is the next best guard (though I don't know if he's worth it at 21). Damn, I can't wait for the draft any longer. How bout the rest of ya?
