Re: Redskins Release Torrence
You got me thinking Killa. (About time right?) If Hall does'nt make it, who replaces him and Torrence next year? Tryon? That may be the case. More than likely Fincher would have been safe on the practice squad and we could have opened up a space there by releasing Westbrook who is'nt as valuable as Torrence. I could be wrong but I don't see Westbrook having much of a future here.

Re: Redskins Release Torrence
They're not. That would have been Brunell's base salary here in 2008 had he not been released.

I think the Skins should have retained Torrence and either cut the midget (Tryon) or put Malcolm Kelley on injured reserve.

Re: Redskins Release Torrence
I would not seriously expect the Skins to cut Springs instead of Torrence, but I think the suggestion deserves a closer look. The point was more to highlight my frustration with Springs as well as the direction of the front office. Skinsfan69 expressed concern that the Skins are moving in the wrong direction, the “pre-Joe days” of Danny and Vinny, and I can kind of see that. Instead of investing in a young, on-the-rise, 26 year old corner who comes cheap (Torrence), we bring in big name corner in Hall, while at the same time a guy like Springs, a 32-year-old injury prone corner, is soaking up a substantial amount of our salary cap, while contributing very little on the field. When added up, these conditions do not seem to point toward a well thought out, long term method for improving this football team. Rather, it appears as a rash, slightly illogical approach to team building that emphasizes big names and hasty judgments. T.O. Killa made a great point: if the Hall deal works out, it will make a lot of sense to cut Springs next season. With Rogers and Hall at corner, it would be crazy to spend over 7 million a year on a #3 corner, especially if he’s injured for much of the season. So if we were to cut Springs, we would need another corner, preferably a cheap, young corner who is a great role player. Know of anyone who fits that description? Oh yeah, Leigh Torrence. |

Regardless of whether Hall or Springs stays, the debate is "who should have been our 4th corner of the future: Torrence or Tryon". Not a debate I am losing sleep over. Also, for the record, Springs is under contract for one more year and I am betting he plays out his contract. Yes, I know it's an expensive year and, yes, I know he only gives us so many games. He is also, for those games worth every bit of his top corner pay. Many teams have paid top dollar for part time players and, IMO, Springs is one those type players. Against the tall, strong receivers he is absolutely a shut down guy. Plus, that gives us one more year to develop depth (either Tryon or some other player).

Re: Redskins Release Torrence
If Hall works out than Springs will get the ax. Period The corners next year would then be Hall, Rodgers, Smoot, Tryon (or someone else). Springs is way to old and a he's salary cap liability.

Re: Redskins Release Torrence
Too old for what? salary cap liability for who?...not yet on either... One its a mistake to give springs his walking papers right now, he misses games here and there now(he used to be there every game) but he is a top flight corner in this league....he matches up (size and speed wise) with TO all day long and plexico too. plus he can still run, last time i checked springs was our best corner. he still is despite carlos's emergence. plus out of hall, smoot, rodgers, tryon...who can play safety....dont say rogers because he has had a couple hits either. keeping springs would be logical on many fronts and keep our defense great depth at 2 positions more than any of those other 4 guys.

Re: Redskins Release Torrence
wow that was a donkey chicken scratch post, but the content is there...SPRINGS is the more logical guy to keep......even more so than smoot, hall, or rogers. i would agree though that rogers is our future at the position, but hes not better at 26 or 27 than springs is at 33. ask greg blache, when springs is healthy hes on the top reciever, bottom line. plex had a day against rogers in the opening game but i will give him a pass because he was coming off that injury but i trust springs more than anyone else on this team in pass coverage.

Basically, if we think he can continue to be a starting corner on a team that employs DeAngelo Hall and Fred Smoot in all of their glory, we should extend his contract. If we don't feel he can stay healthy enough to be a starting corner, then we have to release him at year's end.

Re: Redskins Release Torrence
listen did we say anything about carlos and his injuries i bet he has missed more games than springs the last two years.........without researching i know i am within 2 or 3 games of being correct......there is something to say that if you line up springs over top of owens or any other elite reciever(steve smith, andre johnson, randy moss,....) i am way more confident with him rather than rogers.....like i said i am a huge fan of rogers, but you dont cut the best corner on your team, its a no no.......and 28 played until he was 43 at the corner position......springs can still run and still cover as good as anyone, i cant stress enough that out of hall, smoot, rogers, hes the best....there is no argument, the coaches agree youll see based on the assignments he draws week in and week out since he is been here...think in terms of best players and not younger talent...thats what you want right now, the time will come for our young guys to contribute, but for now you resign an elite nfl corner, and i think this injury bug is over projected.......rogers knee can go at anytime just like anyone elses, the more the marrier

Re: Redskins Release Torrence
Since 2006, Springs has missed 11 games to Carlos' 10.
So Holc is right, although curiously forgets to account for Rogers' missing 9 games thanks to a single injury, while Springs missed 11 games due to 7 or 8 different injuries.

Re: Redskins Release Torrence
I was the person who started the cut Torrence thread. I didn't really want him to get cut. It sucks to see anyone lose his job. But, come on guys we should have seen this coming for a long time.
