I think that drafting at 13 gives us a better chance for a "can't miss" talent but if they threw in their #1 and their first second rounder you probably have to take it.

I would not give up 13 if Andre Smith was there.

Keep in mind that Vrabel was part of the deal.

Andre Smith really would improve the run game:

"An absolute mauler. Overpowering at the point of attack. Takes solid angles and is almost always in position if the block is at the line of scrimmage. Shows good upper-body power and even stronger in the lower body. Drives defenders off the line of scrimmage. Only small concern here is that he sometimes is a bit slow getting into position as a second-level run blocker."

On top of that the front office has shown that it won't shy away from guys with marginal character issues (Davis, Kelly, Thomas, Haynesworth, Hall) so it's definately not out of the range of possibilities. Kind of funny though how a lot of our most recent acquisitions fit the marginal character issues profile.

Plus I think the fact that he was considered a top 5 pick will weigh heavily in their final evaluation of Smith as I think they still had Kelly graded as a first round pick when they took him.

NE didn't get taken by this trade, they cut their salary cap in a huge way. They didn't mind getting a 2nd round pick for a huge costs savings.

Which makes it an even bigger robbery. A veteran leader on defense and a young franchise QB for a lone 2nd round pick.

It'll helps us in a trade down scenario because looking at the NE depth chart the Patriots really need an OLB (Thomas is 31 and missed the last 7 or 8 games) and they showed with Jerod Mayo last year that they're not shy about reaching for the guy they want but I'm on the Andre Smith bandwagon so I'm kind of hoping we stay put at 13.

Re: NFL Network: Matt Cassel Traded to Chiefs.

Unless Cassel is way better than I think he is, the Patriots still win this deal. Smart move by their FO to take what they can get for Cassel despite the fact that there's no market for his services.

If KC pays Cassel like a franchise QB, they're crazy, but at the same time, I don't see how you make this move without extending him.

Re: NFL Network: Matt Cassel Traded to Chiefs.

This is a win - win.
New England originally drafted Cassell in the 7th round (16th pick in the 7th round)..
Good job to use him one season and go 11-5 then turn around and trade him for a high 2nd round pick (3rd pick in the 2nd round).
PLus pats will immediately clear $18.95 million from their 2009 cap space. THey will look to add more talent.

The Chiefs get two starters for one 2nd round pick. Cassell is schooled in the Pats offense and will help the new Chiefs coaching staff install the new system.
The Chiefs improved greatly at a very important position QB, that they were terrible at the last few years. TE Gonzalez is already there. They could draft WR Crabtree and they will have a good offense.

How does Cassell being schooled in the Pats offense help the Cheifs and Todd Haley install their offense?

You mentioned Tony Gonzalez- I think this will go a long way with helping him remain with the team. He said he wants to play for a contender and basically he would request a trade if they didn't make some major changes. I think this counts as major.

This is a great move for KC. I'd have loved to see the Skins make this move but their interest was elsewhere.

Todd Haley was part of Bill Parcells staffs at both the New York Jets and Dallas.
Haley and Bellichek are Parcells students.
Cassell has NFL experience and is lucky to have played and learned in one of the better NFL offenses. He understands how to handle and read NFL defenses. His experience is a plus. You think this is not an advantage?

I think Cassell's experience from last year is more of an advantage than the fact that his new head coach had the same mentor as his old head coach. But I see where you're coming from.

Re: NFL Network: Matt Cassel Traded to Chiefs.

good deal for the chiefs, but the NE offense isn't coming with him.

he's an upgrade, but he won't repeat last year's numbers without moss welker and the rest of the NE crew.

now maybe the pats can grab sanchez and end up even better off because of this... and they also have cap space to sign a couple guys now too.

The "Dirty Sanchez" is either going to Detroit or SF, he won't make it to NE.
