Pierce....
What can you boys tell me about him. I have done a little reading, and looked at stats, but I am not one to judge a player on stats, especially for a MLB. Strengths, weaknesses, are you guys pissed he wasn't signed by the skins, good-riddance type attitude? Normally I do not get excited for football til training camp, but with no hockey baseball and football excitement starts early this year.

Re: Pierce....
I wouldn't say pissed. I would more say it was a bittersweet kind of goodbye. Pierce played great and was the QB of the defense but he obviously was only after a payday and that's fine for him. In his absense, we have started a great precedent by promoting from within rather than hiring from abroad by promoting Marshall to starter.

Re: Pierce....
You're going to like him thats for sure. That guy is going to be running your defense next year, Williams called him the smartest player he ever coached. I'm not pissed at him for leaving, he gave the Skins' a chance to come back and we couldnt match the offer. IT was bittersweet, but you will defintley enjoy him.
I agree with you too Bigskinbaur. That Coles trade .

Re: Pierce....
After reading about the details of the Coles trade, I'm an unhappy camper too.

Re: Pierce....
coggs - he's not the best athlete... don't expect insane ints and ed reeding running... but he's very smart and always in the right place. Not flashy, but very valuable...

Re: Pierce....
Pierce is a good player who's strength is his intelligence and ability to read defenses. It's still a big question makr if he had a lucky year, was a product of the system, or if he's the real deal. I think that he was greatly benefited by lots of talent around him, but not to diminish his ability he's a great player.
Many people on this website considered him the "must sign" of the offseason. Some of us thought Smoot was that player. So far we haven't snagged one. I think you guys may have paid too much, but it's certainly a gamble that could work out for you. |

Re: Pierce....
Hey coggs welcome back, here's my take:
Pierce is a very solid player. Maybe not the most physically gifted player, but he's very smart and works hard off the field to improve his game. He's also pretty versatile as he's played outside and he just learned the MLB spot this year. Plays with fire, not afraid of contact. He's great at making the defensive calls and getting guys in the right places. Definitely fits the definition of a "student of the game" type player. He was a very important piece to the defense last year, will it crumble without him? I doubt it, but I think he's going to be missed. Just to give you an example of what the team thought of him, it was reported that when word came down that Pierce was going to sign with NY, Gibbs received several calls from players asking what was going on, why were we letting Pierce get away. |

Re: Pierce....
He'll run the defense. He'll get people lined up like a coach to make plays. He is so good against the run. His covrage skills against good TE and RBs is so-so. All in all he's a good addition on any team.

Re: Pierce....
I'm one of the lone Pierce detractors. Yes, he has a good head on his shoulders. Yes, he played well last year. However, he's just a guy who had one good season. It's a lot easier to get motivated when you want to get paid than it is when you are paid. I wanna see what money does to him. I still think the Giants overpaid. That's a pretty big price for a guy who played for one year.

Re: Pierce....
Thanks fellas, so he is not Mike Singletary (sp?) or Ray Lewis, but he is certainly better than the nightmare of LB's my squad currently employs. Maybe another Pepper Johnson? I assume not as good as a Harry Carson?
