Last offseason the Giants did exactly what you said. They spent big in FA and they got a dominant DT and an elite Edge Rusher. We criticized them a lot here for spending so much on those positions but they had the last laugh because their defense is much better.

Giants' D went from dead last in yards/game last to being a really solid defense (14th in yards/game), their performance against the cowboys was really impressive! Great defensive game. So yeah I guess that's well spent money.
