Fans read into every play of the preseason, hoping to catch a glimpse of their team’s potential that season. But every year we watch several teams go 0-4 or 1-3 in the preseason, only to turn around and make the playoffs in the regular season. And for every one of those teams, there is a team that goes 4-0 or 3-1 in the August warmups, only to tank in the regular season. So if win-loss record doesn’t help us evaluate anything, what signs of progress can we look for to properly evaluate the team in the preseason?
