Did Taylor Get a Raw Deal?
I for one cannot understand how Sean Taylor could possibly be upset with his rookie contract. Taylor's deal is for 6 years, has a total value of up to $40 million, gives him $13 million in bonuses, and in any year in which he reaches the Pro Bowl, he can get $9 million.
To give you a frame of reference: -last year, a franchise tag for a safety was $4.1 million -Taylor's bonuses are roughly equal to the bonus we gave Coles on a seven year deal for a position (WR) that is among the highest paid. -the total value of Taylor's bonuses is larger than what Terrance Newman got last year (he was also drafted 5th overall as well) and cornerbacks are MUCH better compensated than safeties. -the deal for this rookie safety will make him the highest paid safety in the league (that's right, more than Roy Williams, Brian Dawkins, Ed Reed, et al get paid) -Lawyer Milloy signed a 4 year deal last year worth $15 million with a $5 million signing bonus. I don't know, but I can't see how Taylor could complain about his deal. He isn't a quarterback (Brees or Manning), a reciever (Fitzgerald), or a offensive lineman (Gallery). So I don't think he can compare his deal to theirs; he has to know that safeties make less than everyone on the field except punters and kickers. |
