I asked my girlfriend about this. She said most chicks feel awkward being hit on at the gym because they are all sweaty and not looking their best.

I personally have never tried to pick up a girl at the gym, but if I did I would try a very nonchalant approach. Kind of "accidentally" find a way to start up any kind of dialogue with her. Like ask to work in on the machine she is using, or walk up to the machine next to the one she's on and ask her if she's on it. Or just ask her if she wants to use your machine next. I don't know....
