Neither Shanahan runs a traditional west coast offense. The basic philosophy has always been run the ball and then hit the deep passes off play action. In fact it's that love for the deep ball that sees many a QB under Shanahan struggle to complete more then 60% of their passes. Even Elway. It's also part of the reason Shanahan loves QB's that can throw downfield.
