He's used to survivor and was hungry...
that said, if he thought it was a Coyote, I doubt he'd hop in his car and run. Let me get this straight, he beat his wife, killed a puppy, and ran from cops. Doesn't sound like a man trying to protect his animals. Puppy indicates small animal to me too, not coyote size.
