Pete Dougherty, of the Green Bay Press-Gazette, reports Green Bay Packers S Atari Bigby hopes to receive a long-term deal from the team. Bigby's agent, Jack Bechta, thinks the team may be ready to discuss a long-term deal as early as the regular season.

49ers | A. Smith not guaranteed to start

NFL.com reports San Francisco 49ers QB Alex D. Smith is not guaranteed the starting quarterback position in the upcoming 2008 season, according to head coach Mike Nolan. "It will be an open competition," Nolan said. "It's no one's job to lose. It's both guys' job to take." 49ers QB Shaun Hill is expected to compete with Smith for the starting job.

Dolphins | Torbor signs four-year deal

The Canadian Press reports the Miami Dolphins signed free-agent LB Reggie Torbor (Giants) to a four-year deal. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Cowboys | Team discussing deal for Pacman

The Dallas Morning News reports the Dallas Cowboys held preliminary talks with the Tennessee Titans about trading for suspended CB Pacman Jones, according to a source. The Titans are reportedly not in any rush to make a trade but realize a trade is likely in the future. Jones told his agent, Manny Arora, that the Cowboys are on the top of his list of teams he would like to play for. Arora said he has spoken with numerous teams and would like a trade to happen before the 2008 NFL Draft scheduled for April 26 and April 27. An NFL spokesman said Jones, who is currently suspended, can still be traded to another team. A source said Jones would be willing to renegotiate his current contract to a lower salary to join a team willing to sign him.

Jaguars | Garrard deal update

The Florida Times-Union reports the agent for Jacksonville Jaguars QB David Garrard said he hopes the team and Garrard can reach a new deal in the next few days but said there is the possibility the two sides may not agree on a new contract this year. If the two sides can't agree then Garrard would play out the final year of his current contract, which is worth $2 million, and would hit the free-agent market at the end of the season. The Jaguars could place the franchise tag on Garrard at the end of the 2008 season, which would cost the Jaguars upwards of $10 million to re-sign him.
