I think the concept and the validity of Beck's following are two separate things. Beck is a savvy businessman and entertainer, quite frankly. However, his ratings were taking a serious nosedive prior to his departure from Fox and was very likely why the two sides agreed to part ways. I guess the plus for Beck is that he can now control the content and production value of his program, whereas before he was beholden to the corporate big wigs and advertisers. I guess I'm wondering had Beck had another cable TV platform courting him, would he have gone in that direction instead of GBTV. It's neither here nor there at this point.

In terms of the future of a subscription based online model, I think it's going to happen sooner than we realize. I currently have a monthly online subscription with NetFlix, which allows me to watch thousands of movies, documentaries, and TV programs from my laptop. NetFlix has a partnership with Starz, the cable network, which expires next February. I have no idea how Netflix will replace Startz on their current menu, but it's possible that Starz wants a piece of that revenue for themselves. We'll see.
